CHAPTER 1 – PART 1 The Woman Who Cried First

CHAPTER 1 – PART 1
The Woman Who Cried First

The first police cruiser rolled to a stop in front of the Mendoza estate less than four minutes after Alejandro's call.
Its flashing red and blue lights painted long streaks across the white stone walls, transforming the elegant home into the scene of something far darker than a family disagreement.
Neighbors emerged from their houses one by one.
Curtains shifted.
Phones appeared.
Within moments, half the quiet neighborhood was watching.
Inside the kitchen, Elena couldn't stop shaking.
She remained seated on the hardwood chair, both arms wrapped tightly around her swollen eight-month belly. Every movement from the baby reminded her that she couldn't allow herself to panic.
Not now.
Not when her child's life depended on her remaining calm.
Across the room, the iron still hissed against the granite countertop where Doña Victoria had hastily placed it after Alejandro appeared.
Its metal plate glowed with lingering heat.
The smell of scorched fabric still lingered in the air.
Alejandro stood perfectly still between the two women.
Years in the Army had taught him that chaos only became deadlier when people surrendered to it.
His breathing remained slow.
Measured.
Controlled.
But inside...
Something was breaking.
He had survived ambushes.
Mortar attacks.
Months of enemy fire overseas.
None of those memories compared to the horror of walking through his own back door and finding his pregnant wife cornered by his own mother.
He slowly bent down.
Without taking his eyes off Victoria, he unplugged the iron from the wall.
The tiny click echoed unnaturally loudly.
Only then did he place it carefully on the counter.
No sudden movements.
No shouting.
No threats.
His silence frightened Victoria far more than anger ever could.
Because she knew her son.
When Alejandro truly lost control...
He became quiet.
Very quiet.
The front door opened.
"Police Department!"
Two uniformed officers stepped inside, followed closely by a female sergeant carrying a digital body camera already recording.
"Everyone remain where you are."
Officer Daniel Brooks surveyed the room.
His experienced eyes immediately noticed several things.

The frightened pregnant woman.
The bruising forming along her cheek.
The military officer still dressed in desert camouflage.
The scattered papers.
The smoking household iron.
None of it looked accidental.
"Who placed the emergency call?"
"I did."
Alejandro calmly raised one hand.
"My name is Captain Alejandro Mendoza."
He removed his military identification from his breast pocket.
Brooks briefly examined it before returning it.
"You reported attempted murder?"
"Yes."
Before Alejandro could continue—
Victoria suddenly stumbled forward with astonishing speed.
"Oh, thank goodness you're here!"
Her voice cracked dramatically.
Fresh tears streamed down her perfectly made-up face.
She reached toward the officers as though she herself had barely escaped death.
"My son has just returned from deployment."
She sniffled loudly.
"He's exhausted... confused... and this poor girl..."
She pointed directly at Elena.
"...has been suffering severe emotional problems for months."
Elena stared at her in disbelief.
Even now...
Even after everything...
Victoria could cry on command.
The female sergeant frowned.
"Ma'am, please step back."
Victoria ignored the instruction.
"I've been taking care of Elena every single day."
She dabbed delicately at her eyes with an embroidered handkerchief.
"She refuses medication."
"She imagines terrible things."
"She even believes my son was dead."
Alejandro's jaw tightened.
His voice remained frighteningly calm.
"Because someone gave her a forged military casualty notice."
The room fell silent.
Officer Brooks slowly turned toward Victoria.
"What did he just say?"
Alejandro picked up the folded letter from the kitchen table.
He carefully handed it to the officer.
"This document is fake."
Brooks unfolded it.
His eyebrows slowly rose.
"I'm not military."
He admitted.
"But this will be examined."
"It already has."
Alejandro answered.
"I've completed three overseas deployments."

He pointed calmly toward the paper.
"The casualty notification template hasn't looked like this for over seven years."
Brooks looked again.
Victoria immediately interrupted.
"I don't know anything about military paperwork."
"It arrived in the mail."
Alejandro finally looked directly into her eyes.
"No."
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"It didn't."
For just one second...
Neither of them blinked.
The years between mother and son seemed to disappear.
There had once been trust.
Love.
Respect.
Now there was only suspicion.
Officer Brooks sensed it immediately.
"I need everyone separated."
The female sergeant gently approached Elena.
"Ma'am, would you come with me?"
Elena hesitated.
She looked toward Alejandro.
He nodded once.
"You are safe."
Just hearing those words nearly shattered the fragile strength she had been holding together for months.
She slowly stood.
Pain shot through her lower back.
The sergeant immediately noticed.
"Are you injured?"
Elena instinctively answered the way she always had.
"I'm fine."
Alejandro quietly closed his eyes.
She wasn't fine.
She hadn't been fine for a very long time.
The sergeant helped Elena into the adjoining dining room where paramedics had just arrived.
One medic carefully examined the dark bruising around Elena's cheekbone.
Another noticed older yellowing bruises near her upper arm.
"How old are these?"
Elena looked away.
"I..."
She honestly didn't know anymore.
Days blended into weeks.
Fear blurred time.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen...
Officer Brooks continued speaking with Alejandro.
"When exactly did you return?"
"Thirty-eight minutes ago."
"You came directly here?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
Alejandro answered without embellishment.
"I stopped at the florist outside Fort Liberty."
He glanced toward the crushed white lilies scattered across the floor.
"I bought flowers."
"I intended to surprise my wife."
His voice caught slightly.
"I found my mother threatening her with a heated iron."
Brooks wrote quietly inside his notebook.
"Did you witness physical contact?"
"I witnessed enough."
Victoria immediately protested.
"He misunderstood!"
"I was ironing baby blankets."
No one responded.
The explanation sounded hollow even to her own ears.
Officer Brooks slowly walked toward the dining table.
The neatly arranged stack of papers immediately caught his attention.
He picked up the first page.
Psychological evaluation.
The second.
Recommendation for emergency custody.
The third.
A petition requesting sole guardianship of the unborn child.
Every document centered around one conclusion.
Elena was mentally unstable.
Brooks frowned.
"Who prepared these?"
Victoria answered smoothly.
"Various specialists."
Alejandro stepped forward.
"Read the physician's name."
Brooks looked.
Dr. Nathan Pierce.
Alejandro shook his head.
"He's been retired for four years."
Brooks stopped writing.
"What?"
"My battalion medical officer treated Dr. Pierce last year."
"He has advanced Parkinson's disease."
"He hasn't practiced medicine in years."
Victoria's face visibly paled.
Brooks carefully turned another page.
The signature looked strangely shaky.
Very unlike an experienced physician.
The female sergeant entered from the dining room.
Quietly.
She leaned close to Brooks.
"The pregnant woman has extensive bruising."
Brooks lowered his notebook.
"Fresh?"
"And older ones."
Neither officer spoke for several seconds.
Then Brooks looked directly at Victoria.
"Ma'am..."
His voice had changed completely.
"I'm going to need you to remain here while we continue this investigation."
Victoria forced another trembling smile.
"Officer..."
She laughed weakly.
"You can't seriously believe all this."
Before Brooks could answer—
Another vehicle pulled into the driveway.
Not another patrol car.
A black government SUV.
No markings.
No local plates.
Alejandro recognized it immediately.
His expression hardened.
"Oh no..."
Officer Brooks looked outside.
"You know them?"
Alejandro nodded slowly.
"I do."
Two men in dark suits stepped out of the SUV.
One carried a leather evidence case.
The other displayed a federal credential.
The taller man entered first.
"Captain Alejandro Mendoza?"
"Yes."
"I'm Special Agent Michael Harris."
He held up his badge.
United States Army Criminal Investigation Division.
The entire room froze.
Even Officer Brooks looked surprised.
Harris surveyed the forged casualty notice still lying on the kitchen table.
His expression darkened instantly.
He turned toward Victoria.
"Ma'am..."
His voice was calm.
"When did you last touch this document?"
Victoria's confident smile disappeared.
"I..."
She hesitated.
"I don't remember."
Harris didn't write anything.
He simply opened his evidence case.
Inside were latex gloves.
Evidence bags.
And a portable fingerprint kit.
He carefully slipped on the gloves before lifting the forged notification by one corner.
He examined it for barely three seconds.
Then he looked directly at Alejandro.
His next sentence caused every person in the house to stop breathing.
"Captain..."
He spoke quietly enough that only those nearest could hear.
"This isn't just a forgery."
He slowly turned the paper over.
"Including the counterfeit federal seal..."
"This is a felony involving fraudulent military documents."
He paused.
"And judging by the printing process..."
His eyes settled on Victoria.
"...whoever made this has done it before."
The kitchen fell into absolute silence.
Outside, more unmarked government vehicles rolled slowly through the front gate.
The investigation had just become far bigger than a family dispute.
May you like
It had become a federal case.
