CHAPTER 2 – PART 1 The Ghost Files

CHAPTER 2 – PART 1
The Ghost Files

The flashing blue lights outside the Mendoza estate had not faded by sunrise.
Instead, they had multiplied.
Police cruisers lined both sides of the street.
Black federal SUVs occupied the circular driveway.
Satellite trucks crowded the entrance as reporters spoke excitedly into cameras, speculating about why the Army Criminal Investigation Division had sealed off one of the city's wealthiest homes overnight.
Inside...
No one had slept.
Federal Evidence Lockdown
The dining room had been transformed into a temporary command center.
Laptops covered the antique oak table.
Evidence bags were arranged in neat rows.
Stacks of unopened military letters sat beside forensic cameras.
Every few minutes another investigator entered carrying a newly cataloged box from Victoria's private office.
Special Agent Michael Harris looked at the growing mountain of evidence.
"I've handled fraud."
He quietly admitted.
"I've handled stolen military benefits."
He glanced toward the basement photographs.
"But I've never seen someone spend eight months building a fake reality around a soldier's family."
No one answered.
There wasn't much left to say.
Elena Finally Reads the Truth
A cardboard evidence box sat quietly in front of Elena.
On its side was a handwritten label.
PERSONAL LETTERS — MENDOZA
Agent Rebecca Collins gently slid it toward her.
"I think these belong to you."
Elena hesitated.
Her fingers trembled before lifting the lid.
Inside...
Hundreds of envelopes.
Every one addressed in Alejandro's handwriting.
She picked up the oldest.
The postmark was seven months earlier.
Only three weeks after Alejandro had deployed.
The envelope had never been opened.
Tears blurred her vision before she even unfolded the letter.
"My beautiful Elena,"
"The food here is terrible."
"The weather is worse."
"But every night before I sleep, I imagine you laughing at me for complaining."
A weak smile appeared through her tears.
That sounded exactly like him.
She kept reading.
"I hope our little one is behaving."
"Tell our baby that Daddy is counting the days until I come home."
The paper shook in her hands.
He hadn't abandoned her.
He had never stopped loving her.
Someone had stolen those months.
Alejandro's Guilt
Across the room, Alejandro watched quietly.
He wished he could erase every tear rolling down Elena's face.
Instead...
He blamed himself.
Richard Torres, his commanding officer, arrived shortly after dawn.
The Colonel removed his cap before entering.
He immediately embraced Alejandro.
"I'm glad you're alive."
Alejandro managed a tired smile.
"So am I."
Richard looked around the room.
The evidence.
The investigators.
The sealed basement.
"What happened here?"
Alejandro answered simply.
"I came home."
"I found a crime scene."
The Colonel Reads the Forgery

Agent Harris handed the forged casualty notice to Colonel Torres.
The experienced officer studied it for less than ten seconds.
Then he sighed.
"This is amateur work."
Officer Brooks looked surprised.
"It fooled an entire family."
Richard nodded.
"Because civilians don't know Army procedure."
He pointed to several details.
"The casualty classification code is obsolete."
"The casualty office listed doesn't exist."
"The digital authentication number contains the wrong number of digits."
He looked toward Victoria, who sat silently under police supervision.
"Whoever made this knew enough military terminology to sound convincing..."
"...but not enough to fool someone who actually serves."
Victoria refused to meet his eyes.
The First Arrest
Detective Brooks stepped forward.
"Victoria Mendoza..."
She looked up slowly.
"You are being placed under arrest for aggravated assault pending further investigation."
She forced a bitter smile.
"Only assault?"
Brooks calmly continued.
"Forgery charges are now under federal review."
He carefully read her rights.
As the handcuffs clicked around her wrists...
The room remained silent.
Victoria looked toward Alejandro.
"My own son."
Her voice trembled.
"You would let them arrest me."
Alejandro answered quietly.
"No."
He looked directly into her eyes.
"You arrested yourself the moment you chose cruelty over family."
One Last Performance

As officers escorted Victoria toward the front door...
She suddenly collapsed.
A loud cry echoed through the hallway.
"My heart!"
She clutched her chest dramatically.
"I'm dying!"
The ambulance crew immediately stepped forward.
One paramedic quickly attached a portable heart monitor.
Another checked her pulse.
Thirty seconds later...
The senior medic looked up.
"Vitals are completely normal."
Victoria continued groaning.
The medic calmly removed the sensors.
"There is no medical emergency."
Officer Brooks quietly shook his head.
"It almost worked."
A Familiar Face
While Victoria was placed into the patrol car...
Another black SUV entered the driveway.
This one carried official Department of Defense markings.
A woman in her early forties stepped out wearing civilian clothes.
Sharp eyes.
Dark navy suit.
Military bearing.
Agent Harris immediately greeted her.
"Director Bennett."
She nodded once.
"I came as soon as I received your report."
Alejandro recognized the insignia on her identification.
Defense Counterintelligence.
If someone from Washington had arrived personally...
This investigation had grown far beyond local jurisdiction.
A Disturbing Discovery
Director Bennett entered the command center without wasting time.
"I reviewed the serial number from the forged casualty notice during my flight."
She opened a classified folder.
"The same counterfeit template has appeared four times in the last eighteen months."
Officer Brooks frowned.
"Four families?"
Bennett nodded.
"Three military."
"One Navy."
She laid four photographs across the table.
Each showed a different grieving spouse.
Each had believed their loved one had died overseas.
Each had later discovered the notification was fake.
Elena stared at the pictures.
One woman held two toddlers.
Another was visibly pregnant.
Another stood beside a military grave that had never contained a body.
Her voice barely emerged.
"They all suffered..."
Bennett nodded.
"Exactly as you did."
The Pattern
Agent Collins noticed something unusual.
"Every victim is a military spouse."
"Correct."
"Every forged notification isolated them from outside support."
"Correct."
"And..."
She looked through the financial files recovered from Victoria's office.
"Every case involved large insurance claims."
Director Bennett slowly closed the folder.
"Now you're asking the right question."
She looked toward Alejandro.
"I don't think your mother acted alone."
Silence.
Then Alejandro spoke.
"You think someone supplied her."
"No."
Bennett answered.
"I think someone recruited her."
The Name That Changed Everything
Forensic technicians finished analyzing Victoria's laptop.
One encrypted email chain had finally been restored.
Its sender appeared only as:
AURELIUS
No real name.
No address.
Only encrypted communications.
One recovered message read:
"Subject emotionally isolated."
"Next stage approved."
Another:
"Continue preparing guardianship documents."
A third...
Made everyone's blood run cold.
"Military spouse successfully believes target deceased."
"Proceed to asset transfer phase."
Agent Harris looked at Director Bennett.
"You've heard of Aurelius?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Instead...
She slowly removed another classified file from her briefcase.
Stamped across the front in red letters:
ONGOING FEDERAL INVESTIGATION
She looked directly at Alejandro.
Then at Elena.
Finally she spoke.
"For two years..."
She said quietly.
"We've been hunting an organization that specializes in destroying military families from the inside."
Alejandro felt a chill run through him.
"What organization?"
Director Bennett opened the file.
Inside was a photograph.
The image showed six well-dressed people standing together outside a luxury charity gala.
Five faces had already been identified.
The sixth...
Had been deliberately scratched out.
Beneath the photograph, someone had written one chilling sentence:
"Find the surviving spouses before the soldiers come home."
Elena instinctively wrapped both hands around her unborn baby.
Because for the first time...
May you like
She realized she and her child might never have been Victoria's only targets.
