Chapter 1: What Happened Behind the Locked Door
I arrived at Maplewood Elementary less than twenty minutes after the principal's call.
Nothing could have prepared me for what I saw.
Emma sat wrapped in a blanket inside the nurse's office.
Her tiny shoulders trembled.
Chunks of her hair lay in a plastic evidence bag on the desk.
The sight knocked the air from my lungs.
"Mom?"
Her voice cracked.
I dropped to my knees and pulled her into my arms.
"What happened, sweetheart?"
She buried her face against my chest.
"Aunt Lisa got mad."
The room went silent.
The principal looked sick.
Two police officers stood nearby taking statements.
Emma explained between sobs.
When the cast list for the school play was announced, Lisa's daughter, Madison, lost the lead role.
Emma had won it.
Lisa volunteered backstage that afternoon.
During rehearsal she lured Emma into an empty classroom.
Locked the door.
Then began cutting her hair.
"You don't deserve to be the princess," she had whispered.
"You stole my daughter's part."
By the time teachers found them, Emma's hair had been hacked unevenly down to her scalp.
The police arrested Lisa that evening.
But that wasn't what shocked me most.
It was my parents.
Instead of asking about Emma, they called me screaming.
"How could you let your sister get arrested?"
"She's family!"
"You're ruining her life!"
I hung up without answering.
Because at that moment, I realized something.
They weren't defending a mistake.
