Chapter 3 - Unearthing the Past

Marcus Vance’s office was located in a converted brick warehouse in Boston's North End. It was a stark contrast to the gleaming glass towers of Caldwell Enterprises. When we knocked on his door at four in the morning, looking like two drowned rats, Marcus answered holding a baseball bat.

He was in his late forties now, with graying temples and sharp, intelligent eyes. When he recognized me, his jaw dropped.

"Emily? Emily Caldwell?" He looked past me to Linda, his brow furrowing in confusion. "What on earth happened to you two?"

"My father killed my mother, Marcus," I said bluntly, my voice devoid of emotion. "And he just tried to kill us."

Ten minutes later, we were wrapped in warm blankets, drinking black coffee while Marcus plugged the flash drive into an encrypted, air-gapped laptop. The room was silent save for the rapid clicking of his mouse as he navigated through folders that had been compiled over twelve painful years.

"My God," Marcus breathed, his face losing all its color. "Linda... you managed to pull off a miracle here."

He turned the screen toward us. The files were meticulously organized. There were scanned copies of offshore bank accounts showing a steady drain of my mother's estate into shell companies controlled by Richard. There were emails from an anonymous account—which Marcus quickly identified as Richard's personal server—hiring a mechanic under a false name just forty-eight hours before my mother’s fatal crash.

But the most damning piece of evidence was a video file.

"This is from the security system of the old lake house," Linda said, her voice shaking as she looked away from the screen. "The day of the accident. Richard didn't know the exterior cameras were backing up to a secondary cloud drive that your mother had set up for her personal blog."

Marcus played the video. It was grainy, dated, but unmistakably Richard Caldwell. He was beneath the chassis of my mother's SUV, holding a pair of heavy-duty wire cutters. He emerged a minute later, wiping his hands with a cloth, a cold, satisfied expression on his face.

Tears spilled over my eyelids. Seeing it raw, stripped of rumor or suspicion, made the horror of my mother’s death entirely real. She hadn’t lost control on a slick turn. She had pressed the brake pedal, felt it give way, and realized in her final terrifying moments that her husband had doomed her.

"This is enough to put him away for life," Marcus said, his voice tight with suppressed rage. "Murder, embezzlement, corporate fraud, extortion. It's a complete teardown of the Caldwell empire."

"Then let's take it to the FBI," I said, standing up. "Let's end this."

"It's not that simple, Emily," Marcus cautioned, closing the laptop. "Richard is a cornered animal right now. He knows exactly what Linda had. The moment he realizes you're with her, he won't wait for a legal battle. He has a private security force that is essentially a mercenary group. If we walk into a federal building without securing your safety first, his people could intercept us before the paperwork is even filed."

Suddenly, the lights in the office flickered and died, plunging us into pitch blackness.

The silence that followed was suffocating. Outside, the distant sound of a car engine idling in the alleyway made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

"He found us," Linda whispered, her voice paralyzed with terror. "How did he find us?"

"The car," Marcus cursed softly under his breath. "Did your car have a factory-installed GPS tracking system, Emily?"

My stomach dropped. Caldwell Enterprises standard issue. Every vehicle purchased through the company fleet had an automatic, hardwired tracker built into the engine block. I had completely forgotten.

"We have to go," Marcus said, grabbing the laptop and sliding it into a backpack. "There’s a fire escape through the back storage room. Move, now!"
