Chapter 6 - The Setup

The location chosen for the confrontation was an abandoned maritime warehouse on the Boston harbor—a stark, open structure with clear sightlines and limited escape routes. The FBI spent the afternoon rigging the facility with hidden audio and video feeds, positioning sniper units on the adjacent rooftops, and concealing an entry team within the false walls of the shipping containers inside.
At exactly 4:00 PM, Agent Vance handed me a secure, untraceable mobile phone.
"Keep him on the line for at least sixty seconds so we can verify his current location and ensure he’s traveling toward us alone," Vance instructed.
My fingers trembled as I dialed my father's private number. It rang three times before his smooth, unbothered voice filled the earpiece.
"Emily," he said, as if he were taking a routine business call. "I must admit, your little disappearing act was mildly impressive. But you're playing a game you don't have the capital to win."
"I have the drive, Dad," I said, forcing my voice to sound shaky, terrified, and desperate. "I know everything. I know what you did to Mom."
A brief silence on the line. When he spoke again, the warmth was completely gone, replaced by a razor-sharp edge. "Then you know what happens to people who get in my way. Where are you?"
"Pier 42. The old logistics warehouse," I whispered, sniffing back fake tears. "I want a guarantee, Dad. Let Linda go. Give her the divorce settlement, let her leave the country, and I'll give you the drive. I won't go to the police. I just... I want my life back."
A low chuckle rattled through the speaker. "A transactional compromise. You really are my daughter, Emily. Very well. I will meet you there in one hour. If I see a single police cruiser, or if Linda isn't there with you to verify your compliance, the deal is off, and I will ensure neither of you sees tomorrow."
"She'll be there," I lied, and hung up the phone.
Agent Vance nodded at his team. "We tracked his signal. He's leaving his corporate office in Hartford now, traveling by unmarked vehicle. He's taking the bait."
Linda was kept in a secure holding vehicle two blocks away, despite her frantic protests to stay by my side. Marcus remained with the FBI command center inside a disguised surveillance van parked near the pier.
As the sun began to set over the harbor, painting the sky in bloody shades of crimson and orange, I walked into the cavernous warehouse alone. The wind howled through the broken window panes, carrying the salty, bitter scent of the ocean.
I sat on a wooden crate in the center of the vast floor, the fake flash drive sitting on my knee. Every shadow seemed to stretch and twist in the fading light. The seconds ticked away like a countdown timer to an explosion.

At exactly 5:15 PM, the heavy metal doors at the far end of the warehouse groaned open. A long shadow stretched across the concrete floor, followed by the silhouette of Richard Caldwell.
He walked in completely alone, his tailored coat flapping slightly in the draft, his hands buried in his pockets. He looked entirely at ease, a king inspecting a ruined province.
