Chapter 3 - The Crimson Shadows

The fallout from Dante’s decision was immediate and chaotic. By evening, the underworld gossip lines were burning with the news that Dante Moretti had thrown out the daughter of the wealthiest shipping magnate in the Midwest for a common housemaid.

Celeste did not go quietly. She moved into her father’s luxury hotel downtown, her mind twisted by humiliation and a desperate desire for revenge. She knew secrets about the Moretti organization—financial accounts, shipping routes, names of compromised officials—secrets she had gathered over four years of sitting in the corner of Dante’s meetings like an expensive ornament.

Meanwhile, inside the penthouse, the atmosphere was thick with protective tension. Dante had doubled the guard count, and Serena found herself restricted from leaving the building for her own safety.

"I can't stay here, Mr. Moretti," Serena said that evening, standing in his private study. She was dressed in her normal clothes now—a simple pair of jeans and an old sweater, the uniform gone for good. "My mother needs her medicine, and I have to check on my brother. I can't be a burden to you."

Dante stood by the glass window, looking down at the glittering lights of the Loop. "Your mother’s medicine has already been paid for the next three years, Serena. And your brother Mateo has a security detail watching his dorm at Northwestern as we speak. You are not a burden. You are a target because Celeste wants to hurt me, and she knows the easiest way to do that is to break the only pure thing in this house."

Serena’s breath caught in her throat. She walked closer to him, her bare feet making no sound on the heavy Persian rug. "Why do you care so much? I'm just the girl who made your coffee."

Dante turned around, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the room feel suddenly smaller. He stepped forward, closing the distance between them until she had to tilt her head back to look at him.

"You aren't just the girl who made coffee, Serena," he murmured, his voice dropping to a rough whisper. "You are the only person in this city who looked at me and didn't see a monster or a checkbook. You looked at my men and saw human beings. You looked at my mother and saw a woman who needed comfort. You brought peace into a life that has been nothing but war since I was sixteen years old."

He reached out, his long fingers gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair away from her face, his thumb softly skimming her cheek where the scratch was already fading. "I have spent my whole life protecting a crown made of blood and ashes. But when Celeste struck you... I realized I would burn this whole city to the ground before I let anyone hurt you again."

Serena’s heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. She saw the raw, naked vulnerability in the eyes of Chicago’s most feared don—a vulnerability he had hidden from the world, given to her as a silent vow.

"Dante," she whispered, using his first name for the very first time.

Before she could say anything else, his mouth came down on hers.

The kiss wasn't gentle, but it wasn't cruel either; it was a desperate, consuming hunger that had been building for months behind silent glances and midnight coffee cups. Serena gasped against his lips, her hands rising instinctively to grip his broad shoulders, her fingers digging into the expensive fabric of his shirt as he pulled her flush against his solid chest. The scent of him—pure power, woodsmoke, and a strange, addictive sweetness—wrapped around her like a sanctuary.

When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily. Dante rested his forehead against hers, his eyes dark with an emotion that looked dangerously like love.

"Stay with me tonight, Serena," he pleaded softly. "Just stay."

"I'm here," she whispered back, her hand rising to cup his jaw. "I'm not running."
