Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

The massive iron doors of the warehouse were ripped off their hinges with a deafening crash, a heavy armored SUV ramming through the entryway, its high beams blinding everyone in the room.
The remaining four Vanguard soldiers opened fire immediately, their automatic weapons sparking in the darkness. But Moretti’s men poured out of the vehicle like shadows, their tactical weapons answering with an overwhelming, professional brutality. Within thirty seconds, the guards were eliminated, their bodies falling onto the dusty concrete.
The dust cleared, and Dante Moretti walked into the light of the single hanging bulb.
His coat was gone, his black shirt torn at the shoulder, a trail of fresh blood dripping from his knuckles. His eyes were fixed entirely on the center of the room.
But he froze.
Celeste stood behind Serena’s chair, her left arm wrapped tightly around Serena’s neck, pulling her back violently. In her right hand, Celeste held her silver pistol, the barrel pressed hard against Serena’s temple. Blood was dripping from Serena’s fingers—she had successfully cut through the zip-ties using the wire, her hands now free behind her back, though Celeste hadn't noticed yet.
Valentina sat in her chair five feet away, her eyes calm and steady as she looked at her son.
"One step, Dante!" Celeste screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. "One single step, and I blow her brains onto your shoes! Tell your men to lower their weapons! Tell them to step back!"
Dante stood motionless, his heavy black pistol aimed directly at Celeste, but his hand was perfectly steady. The entire warehouse fell into a tense, suffocating silence, broken only by the howling of the blizzard outside the shattered doors.
"Celeste," Dante said, his voice shockingly calm, though it carried the deep, subterranean vibration of a volcano about to explode. "Look around you. Your father’s hotel is surrounded by federal agents. Your accounts have been frozen by the state department. Marcus Vance is dead. You have nothing left."
"I have her!" Celeste yelled, pulling Serena’s head back further, the metal of the gun digging into her skin. "I have the one thing you love, Dante! You threw me away for a common servant! You humiliated me in front of the whole city! I am Celeste Bowmont! I am the queen of this city, not some little immigrant bitch who sweeps your floors!"
"You were never a queen, Celeste," Serena spoke up, her voice incredibly calm, her eyes locked onto Dante’s. She didn't look afraid; she looked at him with an absolute, unshakeable trust. "A queen doesn't need a gun to feel powerful. A queen doesn't need to break other people to build herself up. You are just a lonely, frightened girl standing in the dark."
"Shut up! Shut up!" Celeste screamed, her focus shifting to Serena for a fraction of a second, her finger tightening on the trigger.
In that precise microsecond of distraction, Serena acted.
With her hands already free behind her back, she reached up and grabbed Celeste’s wrist, twisting it outward with all the strength she possessed. At the same time, she threw her weight forward, tipping the heavy wooden chair over.
Bang.
Celeste’s gun fired into the ceiling rafters, a piece of concrete dust falling into the air.
As Serena and the chair crashed to the concrete floor, Dante moved with a terrifying, supernatural speed. He took two steps forward and fired a single, precise shot.
The bullet caught Celeste directly in her right shoulder, shattering the bone. The silver pistol flew out of her hand, clattering into the darkness as she screamed in agony, collapsing backward onto the concrete, clutching her bloody shoulder.
Dante didn't look at Celeste as she wallowed in the dust. He dropped to his knees beside Serena, his large hands frantically untangling her from the broken pieces of the wooden chair. He pulled her up into his arms, lifting her completely against his chest, his head burying into her dark hair as his body shook with a deep, visceral relief.

"I've got you," he breathed, his voice cracking with an emotion he had never shown to another human being. "I've got you, Serena. You're safe. I'm here."
Serena wrapped her arms around his neck, her face burying into his shoulder, her tears finally flowing, warm and cleansing against his skin. "I knew you'd come," she whispered. "I knew you'd come, Dante."
