Chapter 2: The Sky-High Eviction

Chapter 2: The Sky-High Eviction

The hum of the Boeing 777’s engines felt like a physical vibration beneath Claire’s designer heels as she stood in the brightly lit first-class cabin. The phone pressed to her ear wasn't connected to standard cellular towers; she had swiped her corporate card through the high-speed satellite phone mounted on the bulkhead near the galley.

On the other end of the line, the phone rang exactly twice before a sharp, authoritative voice answered.

"Donald," Claire said, her voice dropping into a register of absolute, freezing clarity. "I need you to look at the regional logistics ledger for the Charles River branch. Right now."

Donald Vance was not just the chairman of Vanguard Logistics—the global firm where Ryan worked—he was also Claire’s godfather and the primary investor in her own construction operations firm.

In first class, Ryan’s face had transformed into a mask of pure terror. He half-rose from his leather seat, his hands trembling as he reached out toward Claire. "Claire... please hang up the phone. Let’s go to the galley. Let’s talk about this. You don't understand what you're seeing."

"I understand perfectly, Ryan," Claire said, ignoring him entirely as she spoke directly into the receiver. "I am currently sitting on Flight 405 to Denver. My husband is sitting in seat 2B. He is currently traveling with his secretary, Chloe, on a first-class ticket. I believe you’ll find this flight was logged as an 'emergency business trip to Portland' on the corporate expense account."

Over the satellite line, a heavy, dangerous silence filled the air. Donald Vance was a man who had built a multi-billion-dollar empire on two principles: absolute efficiency and flawless integrity.

"Claire," Donald’s deep voice boomed through the receiver, laced with cold fury. "Are you absolutely certain?"

"I’m looking right at them, Donald. Chloe is currently wearing the cream designer coat that was allegedly purchased as a 'client appreciation gift' on last month’s expense report. And if your compliance team pulls the digital key logs for the Denver luxury suites booked for this weekend, I’m fairly certain you’ll find Ryan’s corporate signature on the reservation."

"Claire, stop!" Chloe finally found her voice, her quiet, sweet demeanor completely evaporating into a shrill, defensive panic. She pulled the silk blanket up to her chin, her eyes darting around the first-class cabin as the surrounding passengers—including a prominent federal judge and two tech CEOs—turned around to stare openly at the unfolding drama. "You’re making a scene! This is a professional trip!"

"A professional trip?" Claire laughed, a rich, melodic sound that carried through the quiet cabin like a whip crack. "Chloe, sweetheart, your head was in my husband's lap less than ten minutes ago. Unless Vanguard Logistics has recently implemented a highly unorthodox method of corporate massage therapy, I highly doubt the board of directors will find your positioning 'professional.'"

Ryan reached out, his fingers brushing against the sleeve of Claire’s blazer. "Claire, listen to me! I love you. This is a mistake. It’s a temporary lapse in judgment. Think about our apartment, think about what we’ve built—"

"What we built?" Claire stepped back, her eyes narrowing into two slivers of gray ice. "You haven't built anything, Ryan. You’ve spent the last six months skimming from your corporate expense accounts to fund a secondary lifestyle because you were too cowardly to admit that you couldn't keep up with my career. You wanted to feel like the king of the castle, so you found a secretary who would look at you like you invented the wheel."

On the phone, Donald Vance’s voice cut back in.

  • "Claire, return to your seat."

  • "The compliance team has already flagged the accounts."

  • "By the time that plane touches the tarmac in Denver, Ryan will no longer have a corporate title, a corporate card, or a future in global logistics."

"Thank you, Donald," Claire said smoothly. She hung up the telephone, placing it carefully back into its cradle.

She turned back to Ryan and Chloe, her smile radiating a dangerous, absolute calm. "The flight attendant mentioned a blanket earlier, Ryan. I suggest you keep it. Because from this moment on, the world is going to get incredibly cold for both of you."

Without waiting for a response, Claire turned on her heel and walked back down the aisle toward row fourteen, her posture perfectly straight, leaving the first-class cabin in a suffocating shroud of silence.
