Chapter 3: Grounded in Reality

When Flight 405 finally descended through the thick winter clouds and touched down at Denver International Airport, the transition from the sky to the ground brought the cold weight of reality crashing down on Ryan Morgan.

Claire was the first one off the aircraft, her small leather carry-on bag rolling smoothly behind her as she bypassed the first-class cabin entirely. She didn't look back to see her husband frantically gathering his belongings, nor did she care that Chloe was visibly weeping into a tissue as she hurried to keep up with Ryan’s panicked stride.

As Claire walked out into the grand, tented terminal of the airport, her phone buzzed with an automated notification from her private banking application.

[ALERT: JOINT ACCOUNT CONSOLIDATION INITIATED]
- SOURCE: CHARLES RIVER TRUST
- ACTIONS: ALL PERSONAL AND LIQUID ASSETS TRANSFERRED TO INDEPENDENT HOLDING ACCOUNT (CLAIRE MORGAN - SOLE ACCOUNT HOLDER)
- BALANCE REMAINING IN JOINT ACCOUNT: $0.00

A sharp, satisfied breath escaped Claire’s lips. Under the prenuptial agreement that Ryan had eagerly signed five years ago—back when he believed he would always be the primary earner—any assets derived from Claire’s family inheritance or her separate executive bonuses remained entirely her own property in the event of documented infidelity. And Claire had spent the last two hours of the flight uploading screenshots of Ryan and Chloe’s first-class intimacy directly to her legal team's secure server.

"Claire! Claire, wait!"

Ryan’s voice echoed through the crowded baggage claim area. He was running toward her, his tie loosened, his expensive wool coat half-falling off his shoulders. Chloe was lagging twenty yards behind him, struggling to pull two massive designer suitcases through the crowd.

"What do you want, Ryan?" Claire asked, stopping beside a massive stone pillar, her eyes tracking his disheveled appearance with detached amusement.

"My corporate cards are declined," Ryan gasped, his face pale as he held up a sleek black American Express card. "I went to buy an airport coffee while we were waiting for the gate to open, and the terminal rejected it. I called the corporate hotline, and they told me my access credentials have been permanently deactivated by executive order. Claire, did you do this? Do you know what this means for my career?"

"Your career?" Claire tilted her head, her wit cutting through his panic like a scalpel. "Ryan, you don't have a career anymore. You have a very expensive habit of flying your mistress to mountain resorts on your godfather’s dime. Did you honestly believe Donald Vance would let you use his corporate treasury to fund your mid-life crisis?"

"You can't just leave me here with nothing!" Ryan hissed, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper as he noticed several airport travelers pausing to listen. "The penthouse in Boston—the lease is under both our names!"

"The penthouse is under my family’s property trust, Ryan," Claire corrected him gently, her tone dripping with mock sympathy. "The locks are currently being changed by our building manager. Your belongings—specifically the suits I bought you and the watches you didn't earn—are currently being packed into cardboard boxes and sent directly to your mother’s house in New Hampshire."

Chloe finally caught up, her face blotchy from crying, her eyes flashing with a mixture of fear and pure venom as she looked at Claire. "You're a monster, Claire! You're destroying his life over a mistake! He loves me! He’s been miserable with you for a year!"

Claire turned her gaze to the younger woman, her expression completely unbothered. "If he’s been so miserable with my fortune, Chloe, then he is entirely welcome to enjoy his happiness with your salary. Oh, wait... I forgot. Donald fired you as well. So I suppose both of you can enjoy your deep, meaningful love while standing in the unemployment line."

Before either of them could reply, Claire’s private driver—a stoic man named Thomas whom she had employed through her construction firm for years—stepped out of the crowd, taking her carry-on bag with a respectful nod.

"The vehicle is waiting outside, Ms. Morgan," Thomas said, his large frame deliberately blocking Ryan from taking another step toward Claire.

"Thank you, Thomas," Claire said. She looked back at Ryan one last time, her eyes completely empty of the warmth that had once defined their marriage. "Goodbye, Ryan. My lawyers will contact you on Monday morning. Don't bother calling. I’ve already blocked your number from every system I own."
