Chapter 3: The Untouchable Empire

The private recovery suite at the Sterling Medical Center in Upper Manhattan looked more like a five-star hotel than a hospital. The walls were lined with soft, cream-colored silk panels, and a massive panoramic window offered a breathtaking view of Central Park, where the autumn leaves were just beginning to turn gold and amber.

My right leg was encased in a state-of-the-art orthopedic cast, suspended comfortably. The pain was gone, replaced by the dull, numbing warmth of targeted intravenous medication.

For three days, I rested. For three days, the world outside fell completely silent.

On the fourth morning, the heavy mahogany double doors opened, and my father walked in, followed by a woman in a sharp, tailored navy suit carrying a matte-black tablet. This was Evelyn Vance, the chief legal officer of the Sterling global trust—a woman whose legal mind had dismantled entire European conglomerates before breakfast.

"How is the leg, Sophia?" Marcus asked, sitting down in the leather armchair beside my bed.

"The doctors say I’ll be back in heels by the winter collection," I replied, a small, genuine smile breaking across my face. "Thank you, Dad."

"Don't thank me yet," he said, gesturing to Evelyn. "We've only just laid the foundation. Evelyn, give her the update on the Blackwood liquidation."

Evelyn stepped forward, tapping her tablet. A sleek interface displayed a massive web of financial connections, corporate entities, and real estate assets all highlighted in flashing red text.

"As of eight o'clock this morning," Evelyn began, her tone thoroughly professional and completely ruthless, "Alexander Blackwood's primary commercial venture, the Hudson Yards development, has been completely compromised. We purchased eighty-five percent of his secondary debt through our subsidiary companies over the last forty-eight hours. We called the loans effective immediately at 9:00 AM."

"Did he have the liquidity to cover?" I asked, already knowing the answer.

"Not even close," Evelyn smiled faintly. "He attempted to liquidate his personal accounts, but we provided the Internal Revenue Service with a comprehensive dossier detailing his offshore transfers to Miss Clara Duvall’s accounts. The federal government has frozen every asset bearing the Blackwood or Duvall name on suspicion of grand larceny, tax evasion, and corporate embezzlement."

I leaned back against my pillows, a profound sense of justice washing over me. "What about the penthouse?"

"Foreclosed," Marcus cut in, his eyes gleaming with a dark, satisfied amusement. "The deed was tied to a secondary corporate mortgage held by a bank I bought on Wednesday. I’ve already transferred the title completely into your name, Sophia. It’s your property now. Do what you want with it. Burn it down if it pleases you."

"No," I said, my jaw tightening. "I designed that space. I won't let him ruin it for me. I’ll have it completely gutted and turned into the main headquarters for my new fashion house."

"A Sterling house?" Marcus asked, his eyebrow arching slightly.

I looked at my father, seeing the hope he was trying so hard to hide beneath his stern mask. I had spent twenty years running from his name because I was afraid it would swallow me whole. But over the last few days, I had realized that power wasn't a curse unless you used it like Alexander did—to crush the people below you. In the hands of someone who knew the value of loyalty, power was a shield.

"A Sterling-Blackwood house," I said firmly, reaching out to take his hand. "I’m not giving up what I built, Dad. But I’m not running from who I am anymore either."

Marcus’s hand closed around mine, tight and unyielding. "Good. Because tomorrow, the sharks smell the blood in the water. Alexander and Clara are scheduled for their initial bail hearing at the New York State Supreme Court. I think it’s time you made your first public appearance."
