Chapter 4: Total Exposure

The steps of the New York State Supreme Court were swarming with reporters. Flashbulbs exploded like a thousands tiny stars against the gray morning sky, and the air was thick with the shouting of journalists trying to get a statement from the fallen king of Manhattan real estate.
Alexander Blackwood’s arrest had become the biggest media scandal of 2026. The narrative had shifted with terrifying speed: from a golden-boy developer to a brutal, corrupt criminal who had embezzled millions from his own wife while physically assaulting her.
A sleek, armored black limousine pulled up to the curb, flanked by four private security motorcycles.

The security detail stepped out first, clearing a wide, impenetrable path through the press. Then, the door opened.
I stepped out onto the concrete pavement. I was wearing a flawless, custom-tailored white pantsuit from my upcoming spring collection, my right leg supported by a discreet, high-tech carbon-fiber brace hidden beneath the wide hem. My hair was pulled back into a sleek, severe ponytail, and my eyes were hidden behind dark sunglasses. Beside me walked Marcus Sterling, his presence alone enough to make the rowdiest journalists take a step back in silence.
We walked up the steps with a slow, deliberate rhythm. I didn't hide my brace. I didn't hide the slight stiffness in my stride. I wanted every single camera to see exactly what Alexander had done to me—and exactly how high I had climbed since that night.
Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Alexander and Clara were sitting at the defense table, dressed in bright orange department of corrections jumpsuits. Without his designer suits and expensive styling gel, Alexander looked small, haggard, and completely broken. His hair was messy, his skin sallow, and dark circles ringed his eyes. Clara was weeping silently beside her public defender, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold a pen.
When the heavy wooden doors opens and I walked into the gallery, Alexander’s head snapped up.
"Sophia!" he gasped, trying to stand up from his chair before his guard firmly pressed a hand onto his shoulder, forcing him back down. "Sophia, please! Talk to them! Tell them it was an accident! I lost my temper, I didn't mean to hurt you! We can fix this! We can go to counseling!"
I walked past his table without slowing down, taking my seat in the very front row of the gallery, right behind the prosecution's bench. Marcus sat beside me, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the judge's bench like a hawk waiting for its cue.
The judge, a severe woman named Mallory, cleared her throat and looked down at the documents in front of her.
"We are here to determine bail for the defendants, Alexander Blackwood and Clara Duvall," Judge Mallory said, her voice echoing through the microphone. "The charges presented by the state are exceptionally grave: corporate fraud, grand larceny, tax evasion, and first-degree domestic assault resulting in severe bodily harm."
Alexander’s lawyer stood up, his voice trembling slightly. "Your Honor, my client is a prominent member of the Manhattan community. He has deep ties to the city’s infrastructure. We believe a reasonable bail of two million dollars—"
"The state objects, Your Honor," the prosecutor interrupted, standing up firmly. "We have received a certified declaration from the Sterling Trust indicating that the defendant’s entire corporate entity is currently in liquidation. Furthermore, we have evidence that Mr. Blackwood attempted to wire seven million dollars to a non-extradition country via an encrypted account just two hours after his assault on his wife. He is a textbook flight risk."
Judge Mallory’s eyes narrowed as she looked at Alexander. "An anonymous wire transfer? During an active investigation?"
"It wasn't me!" Alexander shouted, panic completely destroying his remaining composure. He turned his head to glare at Clara. "It was her! She’s the one who set up the shell accounts! She’s the one who told me we could squeeze Sophia’s design firm dry! She’s the one who wanted the money!"
"You liar!" Clara shrieked, her tears turning into a mask of pure fury as she lunged across the small table, her fingernails clawing at Alexander’s face before two guards violently pulled her back. "You told me you loved me! You told me she was nothing! You’re the one who threw her down the stairs, you monster!"
The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Flashbulbs went off from the media gallery, and the judge hammered her gavel with furious, rhythmic strokes.
"Silence! Silence in this court!" Judge Mallory bellowed.
I sat completely still in my seat, watching the two people who had tried to reduce my life to a footnote tear each other to pieces in front of the entire world. They had thought I was a nobody because I didn't play their petty games of vanity and greed. They didn't understand that the true strength of a person isn't measured by how loud they can scream, but by how much iron they have in their spine when the world turns cold.
"Bail is denied for both defendants," Judge Mallory ruled, her voice cutting through the remaining murmurs like a guillotine. "They will remain in federal custody until the commencement of the trial on November twelfth."

As the guards led them away in chains, Alexander looked back at me one last time. His eyes begged for mercy, for a single sign of the soft, compliant wife he had spent three years manipulating.
I simply took off my sunglasses, looked him dead in the eye, and turned my back on him.
