Chapter 2: The Legal Leviathan

Chapter 2: The Legal Leviathan

The next three weeks were a masterclass in systematic warfare. While I healed in a secured, private wing of St. Catherine’s under twenty-four-hour police guard, my spreadsheets were doing the work of a firing squad.

Grant’s family empire, Mercer Global Logistics, was a house of cards built on blood money. As a forensic accountant, I hadn't just copied his files; I had traced the digital footprints of his greed back for nearly a decade. He had been skimming millions from a children’s cancer charity he chaired, routing the donations into a network of dummy corporations to fund his private jets, his luxury real estate, and the hush money he paid to keep his previous victims silent.

By the time Grant’s high-priced defense attorney, a notorious legal shark named Arthur Vance, managed to secure a bail hearing, the state had already frozen every single asset with the Mercer name on it.

I attended the bail hearing in a wheelchair, wearing a simple navy blue suit that covered the fading yellow bruises on my arms. When Grant was led into the courtroom in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, the media gallery went wild. The paparazzi lenses clicked like a swarm of digital locusts. He looked ragged, his expensive haircut messy, his arrogant posture completely deflated.

Arthur Vance stood up, adjusting his golden cufflinks. “Your Honor, my client is a pillar of the community. The allegations brought forth by his estranged wife are a malicious, calculated attempt to destroy his reputation during a delicate corporate merger. We ask for a reasonable bail, and the immediate unfreezing of his personal accounts so he can mount a proper defense.”

The lead prosecutor, working closely with Sarah Jenkins, stepped to the podium. She didn't speak; she simply plugged a tablet into the courtroom’s media system.

The massive projector screens on the wall lit up.

Suddenly, Grant’s own voice echoed through the courtroom, loud and terrifyingly clear. It was a video from his private media folder. On the screen, I was cowering against the kitchen island while Grant stood over me, a glass of bourbon in one hand and a heavy leather belt in the other. “Look at the camera, Clara,” his digital voice sneered. “Tell everyone how clumsy you are. Tell them what happens when you don't learn your lesson.”

The courtroom erupted into gasps of horror. Several journalists covered their mouths. Grant pressed his face against the defense table, unable to look at his own cruelty magnified for the world to see.

“Furthermore, Your Honor,” the prosecutor stated, her voice like iron, “we have submitted evidence of multiple shell accounts indicating that Mr. Mercer was preparing to liquidate twenty million dollars to flee to a non-extradition country. He is an extreme flight risk and a lethal danger to the victim.”

The judge didn't hesitate for a single second. She slammed her gavel down with a crack that sounded like a gunshot.

“Bail is denied,” the judge ruled, looking at Grant with deep disgust. “Mr. Mercer will remain in maximum-security custody until his trial. And the asset freezes will remain in place to protect the defrauded charity funds.”

As the guards stood Grant up to lead him back to the holding cells, he caught my eye through the glass partition. He opened his mouth, trying to mouthed a threat, but I didn't look away. I didn't flinch. I sat tall in my wheelchair, looking at him not as a terrified victim, but as the architect of his absolute destruction. He had spent three years breaking me for his entertainment; now, I was going to watch the law break him for justice.
