Chapter 3: The Shadow Assets

Chapter 3: The Shadow Assets
A cornered predator never goes down without a fight, and Grant Mercer was a creature raised in the shadows of old money and corruption.
A month into his incarceration, while I was settling into a quiet, heavily secured apartment in downtown Columbus, Sarah Jenkins called me into the precinct. Her face was grim as she led me into a secure briefing room filled with federal agents from the IRS and the FBI.
“Clara, we’ve hit a wall,” Sarah said, throwing a series of bank ledgers onto the table. “We’ve liquidated his domestic accounts and returned fifteen million dollars to the cancer charity. But our forensic teams have noticed a massive discrepancy. There is an anonymous shadow account, titled 'Project Janus,' that is systematically draining the remains of Mercer Global from the inside out. Someone is stealing the evidence before we can present it at the final trial.”
I pulled my reading glasses down and dragged the laptop toward me. My fingers flew across the keyboard, entering the hidden backdoors of the Mercer internal servers that I had mapped out during my years of captivity.

“It’s not an outsider, Sarah,” I said, my eyes tracking a series of complex, automated wire transfers moving through an encrypted bank in Liechtenstein. “It’s Grant’s father, Charles Mercer.”
The room went completely silent. Charles Mercer was a retired federal judge, a patriarch whose political influence stretched all the way to Washington. He had spent the last month publicly pretending to disown his son to protect the family’s political legacy, but behind the scenes, he was executing a massive, illicit cleanup operation.
“He’s moving the money to buy off the primary witnesses,” an FBI agent noted, leaning over my shoulder. “If Charles completely drains the remaining accounts, the corporate fraud charges against Grant will fall apart due to lack of a traceable paper trail. We need the encryption keys for Project Janus, but they are locked inside a physical cold-storage drive inside the Mercer family estate in Newport.”
The Newport estate was a literal fortress, protected by private security guards, biometric locks, and the legal immunity of a retired federal judge. A standard search warrant would take weeks to clear through the corrupt political channels Charles controlled.
“We don't have weeks,” I said, standing up from the table. My ribs still ached, but the fire in my veins was burning hotter than ever. “Charles Mercer thinks I’m a broken, terrified girl who is hiding in a safe house. He thinks his son’s trial is a simple domestic issue he can sweep under the rug with enough cash.”
“What are you suggesting, Clara?” Sarah asked, her brow furrowed with concern.

“I’m suggesting we use his vanity against him,” I said, a cold smile touching my lips. “Charles is hosting the annual Mercer Autumn Gala this Saturday at the Newport estate to prove to his investors that the family is still powerful despite Grant’s 'troubles.' He invited the entire political elite. He wants everyone to see that the Vales and the Mercers are untouchable.”
I looked at Sarah, my eyes locked onto hers with absolute certainty. “Get me an invitation. I’m going to walk through his front door, and I’m going to take that drive right out from under his nose. Let’s see how powerful his empire is when his own daughter-in-law uncovers the rot in his basement.”
