Chapter 2 The Daughter They Tried to Erase

Chapter 2

The Daughter They Tried to Erase

By sunrise, the wedding had disappeared from every social media trend.

Not because people had stopped talking about it.

Because the story had become something much bigger.

Every major financial network carried the same headline.

FEDERAL RAID FOLLOWS BILLION-DOLLAR WEDDING SCANDAL.

Photographs of Richard Vale being escorted from his own daughter's wedding stood beside images of FBI agents carrying boxes from Vale Harbor Capital.

News helicopters circled the company's Boston headquarters.

Financial commentators abandoned stock market discussions to analyze the collapse of what had been considered one of New England's safest private investment firms.

Claire watched none of it.

She sat quietly in a small beach cottage overlooking Narragansett Bay, sipping cold coffee that had long since lost its flavor.

Her phone vibrated every few seconds.

Unknown numbers.

Journalists.

Former coworkers.

Television producers.

Old college friends who had not spoken to her in years.

She answered none of them.

Instead, she waited for only one call.

At exactly 8:17 a.m., it came.

"Good morning, Claire."

She recognized the voice immediately.

Special Agent Daniel Brooks.

The man she had secretly worked with for nearly five years.

"It started faster than expected," he said.

"It wasn't supposed to happen at the wedding."

Claire looked out at the gray ocean.

"I know."

"It happened because your father tried to intimidate witnesses last night."

She frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"He made three phone calls after you released the evidence package."

"He instructed two executives to destroy backup servers."

Claire closed her eyes.

"So that's why you moved immediately."

"We had no choice."

Three hours earlier...

At Vale Harbor Capital's headquarters...

Agents had entered the executive floor carrying sealed evidence containers.

Employees watched silently as computer servers were disconnected.

Accounting offices were sealed.

Executive phones were confiscated.

One young accountant quietly approached an FBI agent.

"I..."

She looked terrified.

"I need to tell someone something."

Within minutes she was sitting inside a conference room.

Crying.

"I've been changing numbers for almost two years."

"Did Mr. Vale instruct you?"

She nodded.

"If I refused..."

"He said he'd ruin my career."

That accountant became the first of dozens.

By lunchtime, the investigation had exploded beyond anything Claire had imagined.

Meanwhile...

Richard sat inside a federal interview room.

Gray walls.

Metal table.

No windows.

Across from him sat two investigators.

Neither looked angry.

Experienced investigators rarely did.

Special Agent Brooks placed a thick binder on the table.

Richard smiled confidently.

"My attorney will be here."

"I'm sure."

Brooks opened the binder.

"The problem isn't whether your attorney arrives."

"It's whether he can explain this."

He slid forward a photograph.

Richard glanced down.

His smile vanished.

It showed him entering a private bank in Zurich six years earlier.

"I travel frequently."

Brooks placed down another.

Then another.

Then another.

Each photograph destroyed another lie.

Offshore meetings.

Secret accounts.

Cash transfers.

Encrypted phones.

Finally...

Brooks played an audio recording.

Richard listened to his own voice discussing how to move investor money before regulators discovered the fraud.

The recording ended.

Richard leaned back slowly.

"I want my lawyer."

Across town...

Elaine Vale sat in another interview room.

She still wore the expensive emerald dress from Vanessa's wedding.

Mascara streaked beneath her eyes.

Gone was the polished charity executive.

Now she looked exhausted.

Agent Melissa Grant placed several photographs on the table.

"Recognize these children?"

Elaine frowned.

"They're scholarship recipients."

"No."

"They're children whose education fund disappeared after donations were redirected through your nonprofit."

Elaine stared.

"I never handled finances."

Grant calmly produced Elaine's signature.

Repeated.

Hundreds of times.

"You handled more than you remember."

Claire's phone rang again.

This time...

It was Vanessa.

Claire almost ignored it.

Instead...

She answered.

Silence.

Then soft breathing.

Finally...

"You destroyed everything."

Vanessa sounded nothing like the confident bride from yesterday.

"You helped destroy it."

Claire answered quietly.

"I didn't know."

"You knew enough."

"No."

"I knew Dad exaggerated."

"I didn't know..."

Her voice broke.

"I didn't know it was this bad."

Claire remained silent.

Vanessa continued crying.

"Jonathan left."

"I know."

"My wedding..."

"My marriage..."

"My life..."

Claire interrupted gently.

"None of that happened because of me."

"It happened because Mom and Dad built your life on stolen money."

Another long silence followed.

Then Vanessa whispered something Claire never expected.

"I'm scared."

For years...

Vanessa had never admitted weakness.

Never apologized.

Never asked for help.

Now...

She sounded like the frightened little sister Claire barely remembered from childhood.

"Where are you?"

Claire asked.

"I'm still at the estate."

"They won't let me leave."

"Who?"

"The reporters."

Claire sighed.

"Stay inside."

"I'll come."

An hour later...

Claire drove through crowds of journalists surrounding the Newport estate.

Camera flashes exploded the moment they recognized her.

"Claire!"

"Did you cooperate with federal authorities?"

"Did your parents steal investor money?"

"Will you testify?"

She answered nothing.

Inside the mansion...

The silence felt unnatural.

Only yesterday hundreds of guests filled every room.

Now abandoned flower arrangements lined empty hallways.

Champagne glasses remained untouched on tables.

The wedding cake stood exactly where it had been left.

Untouched.

Beautiful.

Meaningless.

Claire found Vanessa sitting alone in the bridal suite.

Still wearing part of her wedding gown.

Her veil lay crumpled beside her.

Her makeup had long since washed away with tears.

For several moments...

Neither sister spoke.

Finally...

Vanessa asked,

"Did you ever hate me?"

Claire looked honestly at her.

"No."

"I envied you."

"I thought Mom loved you more."

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You were wrong."

Claire frowned.

"What?"

Vanessa stared toward the window.

"I wasn't the favorite."

"I was the investment."

Claire blinked.

"What does that mean?"

Vanessa slowly stood.

Then walked toward an antique writing desk.

She unlocked the bottom drawer.

Inside sat dozens of leather journals.

She handed one to Claire.

"I found these after Grandma died."

Claire opened the first page.

Her grandmother's handwriting filled every line.

She read aloud.

"Richard doesn't love his daughters differently."

"He values them differently."

"Vanessa brings status."

"Claire asks questions."

"Richard fears intelligent children."

Claire slowly turned another page.

Another.

Then froze.

One paragraph had been underlined.

"If Claire ever discovers the Harbor accounts, Richard will destroy her reputation before she reaches the authorities."

The entry was dated...

Seven years earlier.

Before Claire had discovered anything.

Before the investigations.

Before anyone suspected the fraud.

Claire looked up.

"He planned it."

Vanessa nodded.

"The lies."

"The stories about your mental health."

"The rumors."

"It was all prepared."

Claire's chest tightened.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The lost friendships.

The canceled job offers.

Anonymous complaints sent to employers.

Even her dismissal from one consulting position years earlier.

Her father hadn't reacted to her whistleblowing.

He had anticipated it.

And spent years making sure no one would believe her.

Vanessa wiped away fresh tears.

"I should have told you."

"You didn't know."

"I suspected."

Claire remained quiet.

"I was afraid."

Claire reached across the table.

For the first time in years...

She held her sister's hand.

"We can't change yesterday."

Vanessa squeezed her fingers.

"What happens now?"

Claire looked toward the ocean outside the estate.

"The truth."

"The whole truth."

At that exact moment...

Hundreds of miles away in Washington, D.C...

A senior SEC director entered a conference room carrying Claire's evidence package.

Twelve officials waited.

He placed the thick binder on the table.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"This is no longer one investment fraud."

He opened the first page.

"We believe we've uncovered one of the largest financial crime networks on the East Coast."

The room fell silent.

One commissioner looked up.

"How many companies are connected?"

The director answered quietly.

"So far..."

"Thirty-eight."

Everyone stared.

Then someone asked the question Claire herself had begun wondering.

"If Richard Vale wasn't the mastermind..."

May you like

"...who was?"
