Chapter 5 The Countdown

Chapter 5
The Countdown
00:00:42
The digital timer glowed an angry red beneath the steel desk.
For one impossible heartbeat, nobody moved.
The calm voice of Arthur Holloway still echoed through the underground archive.
"My dear Claire... if I cannot keep my legacy... no one will."

Then Daniel Brooks roared.
"EVERYBODY MOVE!"
The spell shattered.
FBI agents sprinted toward the staircase while bomb technicians shouted overlapping instructions. Boxes of evidence were abandoned where they stood. Laptops, ledgers, hard drives, photographs—years of work suddenly meant nothing if no one survived long enough to read them.
Claire ran beside Daniel, her lungs burning.
Behind them, the countdown continued.
00:00:37
The tactical team reached the basement entrance.
The steel security door refused to move.
One agent slammed his shoulder into it.
Nothing.
Another tried the emergency override.
Dead.
"It locked electronically!"
Daniel grabbed the control panel.
The screen flashed one message.
REMOTE LOCK ENGAGED
His stomach dropped.
Arthur hadn't merely planted explosives.
He had designed the archive to become a tomb.
The bomb technician knelt beside the panel.
"I need time!"
Daniel looked back toward the blinking timer.
"You've got thirty seconds."
The technician's hands flew across exposed wiring.
"No..."
He muttered.
"This isn't connected locally."
"What?"
"The lock is controlled remotely."
Daniel understood immediately.
"Arthur."
The old man wasn't simply running.
He was watching.
Miles away, inside the penthouse overlooking Central Park, Arthur Holloway sat comfortably in an antique leather chair.
Several computer monitors displayed live security footage from Holloway Manor.
He watched FBI agents desperately trying to escape.
His expensive whiskey remained untouched.
His expression never changed.
A younger man stood beside him.
"Sir..."
"They're trapped."
Arthur nodded.
"They chose to enter."
The younger man hesitated.
"Claire is still inside."
Arthur looked almost disappointed.
"I know."
Back at the estate...
00:00:24
The bomb technician suddenly smiled.
"I've got it!"
He cut one cable.
The electronic lock clicked.
Daniel immediately grabbed the massive handle.
"Pull!"
Five agents threw their weight against the steel door.
It opened only a few inches.
Something blocked it.
Another team pushed harder.
Metal groaned.
Finally...
The obstruction shifted.
The doorway opened.
Everyone rushed through.
They barely reached the upper hallway before the explosion erupted beneath them.
The mansion shook violently.
A deafening blast ripped upward through concrete and steel.
The floor buckled.
Windows exploded outward.
A wall collapsed behind Claire as Daniel tackled her to the ground.
Heat rushed through the hallway like an oven opening.
Dust swallowed everything.
For several endless seconds...
There was only darkness.
When the noise finally stopped...
Claire slowly opened her eyes.
Her ears rang.
Pieces of plaster covered her hair.
Daniel lifted himself from the floor.
"You okay?"
She nodded weakly.
"I think so."
Around them...
Agents helped one another stand.
Miraculously...
Everyone had escaped.
Barely.
The underground archive, however...
Was gone.
Collapsed beneath hundreds of tons of stone.
Outside...
Firefighters arrived within minutes.
Smoke poured from shattered windows.
The once-beautiful manor had become a burning ruin.
Claire stared silently.
"So much evidence..."
Daniel stood beside her.
"Not all of it."
She looked up.
"What?"
Daniel smiled for the first time that day.
"We copied everything."
Claire blinked.
"When?"
"The moment we entered."
He pointed toward a communications truck.
Digital forensic specialists were already uploading encrypted backups.
Arthur had destroyed paper.
But he hadn't destroyed information.
For the first time in days...
Claire allowed herself a small smile.
Arthur had failed.
That victory lasted exactly eleven minutes.
An FBI analyst sprinted across the lawn.
"Daniel!"
He turned.
"What?"
"We've got a breach."
Daniel's smile disappeared.
"What kind?"
"Our witness."
"Witness Forty-Two?"
The analyst nodded.
"He disappeared."
Inside federal protective custody...
Security cameras had captured only one unusual event.
A fire alarm.
Thirty-seven seconds of confusion.
Emergency lights.
Evacuation.
When officers returned...
Witness Forty-Two was gone.
His room remained locked from the inside.
No broken windows.
No forced doors.
Only one object remained on his pillow.
A white chess king.
Daniel quietly closed the report.
Arthur's signature.
That evening...
Television stations across America interrupted regular programming.
Breaking News.
FEDERAL RAID ON HOLLOWAY ESTATE ENDS IN MASSIVE EXPLOSION.
Reporters speculated wildly.
Financial networks reported another collapse.
Holloway International stock fell another twenty-eight percent.
Banks suspended lending.
Foreign regulators launched investigations.
Board members resigned by the hour.
The empire Arthur had spent four decades building was beginning to crumble.
Yet...
Arthur himself remained invisible.
Claire returned to federal safe housing shortly after midnight.
She couldn't sleep.
Images of the explosion replayed endlessly inside her mind.
Her phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
Daniel had warned her never to answer.
Something made her do it anyway.
Silence greeted her.
Then...
Arthur spoke.
His voice remained calm.
"I underestimated you."
Claire gripped the phone tightly.
"You murdered people."
"I protected what I built."
"You tried to kill me."
"I gave you every opportunity to walk away."
Claire's voice hardened.
"I'm never walking away."
Arthur almost sounded amused.
"I know."
A pause.
Then...
"You remind me of your grandfather."
Claire froze.
"My grandfather?"
"He refused to compromise."
Another pause.
"And that is precisely why he died."
The line disconnected.
Claire couldn't breathe.
Her grandfather.
Officially...
He had suffered a heart attack twenty-three years earlier.
She immediately called Daniel.
Twenty minutes later he arrived.
Claire repeated every word.
Daniel remained unusually quiet.
Finally...
He asked,
"Your grandfather..."
"Did anyone perform an autopsy?"
Claire frowned.
"No."
"He died at home."
Daniel looked toward the evidence board.
"Then maybe..."
"He didn't die naturally."
The next morning...
Federal agents reopened a case that had been closed for over two decades.
Medical records were requested.
Insurance documents recovered.
Old police reports retrieved from archives.
A retired detective was interviewed.
His memory surprised everyone.
"I always thought something was wrong."
"What do you mean?" Daniel asked.
"He was healthy."
"Excellent heart."
"No history."
"So why wasn't it investigated?"
The old detective sighed.
"Power."
"The family didn't want questions."
"And Arthur Holloway personally requested privacy."
Daniel slowly looked toward Claire.
"If Arthur eliminated your grandfather..."
Claire finished the thought.
"He didn't steal my father's company."
"He stole our family's future."
Hours later...
Forensic accountants uncovered another hidden document buried inside the digital backup copied before the explosion.
It wasn't a financial ledger.
It was a private agreement.
Signed twenty-four years earlier.
Between Arthur Holloway...
And Richard Vale.
Claire stared at the scanned page.
Her hands trembled.
The contract contained only one handwritten sentence.
"When the old man is gone, everything passes to us."
Signed.
Arthur Holloway.
Richard Vale.
Dated...
Three weeks before Claire's grandfather died.
Daniel looked at Claire.
"This changes everything."
She slowly nodded.
Tears filled her eyes.
Her parents hadn't simply hidden financial crimes.
They had participated in something far darker.
The destruction of an entire family.
Late that night...
Arthur stood aboard a private yacht quietly leaving New York Harbor.
The city skyline slowly disappeared behind him.
His satellite phone rang.
"Yes?"
"The authorities found the partnership agreement."
Arthur remained silent.
"They're reopening the grandfather's death."
Still...
No emotion.
Finally he smiled.
"Good."
The man on the other end sounded confused.
"Sir?"
Arthur looked toward the dark Atlantic Ocean.
"They're finally asking the right questions."
He ended the call.
Then quietly opened a weathered wooden box.
Inside lay one old photograph.
A much younger Arthur...
Standing beside Claire's grandfather.
The two men smiled like brothers.
Arthur gently touched the photograph.
His voice barely rose above a whisper.
"I'm coming home, old friend."
Far out in the darkness...
The yacht disappeared into the fog.
And Claire still had no idea...
That Arthur wasn't running from justice.
May you like
He was sailing toward the one place where the truth about everything had begun.
