Chapter 1: The Wrath of a Devoted Husband

Chapter 1: The Wrath of a Devoted Husband

The roar that ripped from Ethan’s throat wasn't just loud; it was primal, vibrating through the structural beams of my parents' suburban Denver home. He had stepped out to the car for less than two minutes to retrieve the ultrasound photos we had proudly framed to gift them. In those one hundred and twenty seconds, his entire world had been shattered.

When he crossed the threshold back into the living room, the scene before him was something out of a horror film. I was crumpled on the hardwood floor, motionless, my eyes closed. A dark, terrifying crimson pool was slowly expanding outward from beneath my head, staining the polished oak. My father, Richard, was casually standing over my limp body, his shoe still extended from nudging my ribs, while my mother, Beatrice, was stroking Madison’s hair as my sister let out loud, performative wails.

"GET AWAY FROM HER!" Ethan roared again, his face flushed a dangerous, burning red.

For the first time in her life, Madison’s fake crying instantly stopped. The sheer, unadulterated fury in Ethan’s eyes froze her to the spot. My father stepped back, raising his hands defensively, though his expression remained arrogant.

"Now look here, Ethan, don't scream in my house," Richard blustered, trying to assert his authority. "Emily is just throwing one of her usual tantrums because Madison accidentally bumped into her. She’s overreacting to get attention, as always. Tell her to get up."

Ethan didn't even look at Richard. He dropped the framed ultrasound photos—the glass shattering across the entryway—and threw himself onto the floor beside me. His hands were shaking violently as he hovered over my face, terrified to touch me incorrectly.

"Emily? Emily, please, look at me," he choked out, his voice instantly cracking with panic. He gently pressed a clean handkerchief against the gash on the back of my head, his fingers immediately becoming slick with my blood. "Oh God, Emily, wake up. Please wake up."

With his other hand, he pulled his phone from his pocket, his fingers frantically dialing 911.

Seeing the phone, Beatrice panicked. She stepped forward, her voice high and screeching. "Ethan, don't call the police! You'll ruin Madison's chances at her new internship! It was a family squabble! Emily started it by flaunting her pregnancy and provoking her sister!"

Ethan looked up at my mother, and the look in his eyes was so terrifyingly cold that Beatrice physically recoiled, stepping behind her husband.

"Operator," Ethan spoke into the phone, his voice shaking but lethal. "I need an ambulance and police units immediately at 1422 Whispering Pines Drive. My pregnant wife was violently assaulted. She was kicked in the abdomen and thrown against a table. She is unconscious, bleeding heavily from the head, and unresponsive. Please, hurry."

"Ethan, hang up that phone!" Richard demanded, taking a aggressive step forward. "You do not bring authority into my home over a sibling misunderstanding! I am the patriarch here!"

"If you take one more step toward me or my wife," Ethan whispered, his voice dangerously low, "I will not wait for the police to handle this. I will defend my family with everything I have."

Richard froze. He had never seen Ethan like this. Ethan had always been the polite, quiet, accommodating son-in-law who patiently endured the passive-aggressive comments during Thanksgiving dinners. That man was gone. In his place stood a guardian willing to burn everything down to protect his wife and unborn child.

Within seven minutes, the distance echoed with the rising wails of sirens. Madison began to whimper truly now, realizing the bubble of protection her parents had built around her couldn't stop the flashing red and blue lights approaching the driveway.

"Mommy, do something," Madison whispered, clutching Beatrice’s sleeve. "Don't let them take me. Emily is doing this on purpose to ruin my life!"

"Shh, baby, Mommy’s here. We’ll tell the police she tripped," Beatrice whispered back, her eyes darting around the room, already constructing a web of lies to protect the golden child.

But as the paramedics burst through the front door, closely followed by three uniform Denver police officers, Ethan stood up, standing like an impenetrable wall between my family and the medical team working frantically to save my life.
