Chapter 4: The Confrontation at the Threshold

Chapter 4: The Confrontation at the Threshold
Two days after the incident, my parents and sister still believed their lie had worked. They hadn't called to check on me. They hadn't sent a text. In their minds, I had crawled out of the hospital, ashamed of my "hysteria," and would eventually come back crawling to apologize for ruining their afternoon.
They were entirely unprepared for what happened next.
Accompanied by Victoria Vance and two private process servers, Ethan and I drove back to the Whispering Pines residence. I needed to look them in the eye one last time when their fortress of lies collapsed.
Ethan rang the doorbell.
A moment later, Beatrice opened the door. She was wearing a silk blouse, holding a cup of tea. When she saw me standing there, a bandage wrapped around my head, her expression instantly hardened into a mask of annoyed condescension.

"Oh, Emily. You're finally back," she sighed, not even offering to let us in. "I hope you've come to apologize to your sister. Madison has been an absolute wreck for forty-eight hours because of the scene you caused. The police actually came here, Emily! Do you have any idea how embarrassing that is for our reputation in this neighborhood?"
"Let us in, Beatrice," I said, my voice completely devoid of inflection.
Richard appeared behind her, his face dark. "You have a lot of nerve showing up here with strangers, Emily. If you’re here to cause more drama, you can leave. We've decided you need a timeout from this family until you get your mental health checked."
"Move aside, Richard," Victoria Vance stepped forward, flashing her legal credentials. "I am Victoria Vance, legal counsel for Emily and Ethan Carter. We are here to execute a formal legal notice, and trust me, you want this conversation to happen inside rather than on your front porch where the neighbors can hear every word."
Sensing the shift in energy, Richard reluctantly stepped back, allowing us into the foyer. Madison was sitting at the dining table, scrolling on her laptop, looking entirely unbothered. When she saw me, she rolled her eyes.
"Ugh, the drama queen returns," Madison scoffed. "Did you bring a bandage just for show, Emily? It’s not even that deep."
Victoria Vance walked straight to the dining table, pulled a laptop from her briefcase, opened it, and turned it toward my family.
"We are here to discuss options before the state takes this entirely out of our hands," Victoria said calmly. "I suggest you watch this."
She hit play.
The living room erupted with the sound of Madison’s voice through the laptop speakers: "What happens if I kick it?" Then the sickening sound of the kick, followed by my father’s voice telling me to stop pretending while I lay bleeding on the floor.
Beatrice’s face drained of all color instantly. Her tea cup rattled against the saucer before she set it down with a shaking hand. Richard’s jaw dropped, his eyes fixated on the disguised smoke-detector camera angle that captured his own foot poking my unconscious body.
Madison froze, her hand hovering over her laptop, her face turning a ghastly, pale green.
"Where... where did you get that?" Richard stammered, his voice suddenly losing all of its patriarchal weight.
"From your own secure cloud server, Richard," Ethan said, stepping forward, his arms crossed. "The system you bragged about. The police have this video. The District Attorney has this video."
"Emily, please," Beatrice suddenly gasped, dropping her tea cup as she lunged forward, trying to grab my hands. I stepped back, letting her hands fall into empty air. "We... we didn't mean it that way! We were just confused! We wanted to protect Madison’s future, you know how fragile she is! You’re the older sister, you’re supposed to be the strong one!"
"Fragile?" I whispered, looking at Madison, who was now trembling violently. "She tried to kill my baby. She kicked me in the womb, she split my head open, and you stood over my body and told me to stop faking it. You kicked my ribs while I was blacked out."

"It was an accident!" Madison shrieked, tears of actual terror finally spilling over her cheeks. "Emily, please! I have an interview next week! I can't have a record! Tell the police it was a joke!"
"It’s too late for that," Victoria Vance said, closing the laptop with a sharp click. "Felony assault charges are being finalized as we speak. But my clients are offering you one single, non-negotiable settlement regarding your civil liabilities and family assets before the handcuffs come out."
