Chapter 2: Secrets in the Blood

Chapter 2: Secrets in the Blood

The private medical wing of the Morelli compound was state-of-the-art, cleaner and more advanced than any public hospital in the state. By 4:00 AM, Elena was settled into a secure ICU room surrounded by bulletproof glass and monitored by two specialized trauma nurses whom Dante paid a king’s ransom to keep silent.

Dante stood outside the glass, his hand finally washed and bandaged. Marco approached him, carrying a sleek laptop.

“Tony cracked the encrypted drive found on the Russian courier,” Marco reported quietly. “The one who died on the operating table at St. Mary’s an hour ago.”

“What was he carrying that was worth starting a war over?” Dante asked.

Marco opened the laptop, revealing a ledger of names, bank accounts, and container numbers originating from the Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal. “It’s not just a smuggling ledger, Boss. It’s a blueprint of the Marcone family’s entire human trafficking and illicit arms network. The Russians stole it to blackmail them. But look at the bottom of the January manifest.”

Dante leaned in. His eyes scanned the digital document, freezing on a specific entry. A shipment of unregulated, experimental pharmaceuticals destined for an offshore black-market clinic. The signature authorizing the release of the medical cargo from the port belonged to a high-ranking administrator at St. Mary’s Hospital—a man named Dr. Victor Vance.

“Elena didn't just walk into a random shootout,” Dante said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “She’s a pediatric nurse. She monitors the inventory of specialized medications. Marco... did she notice something she shouldn't have?”

“We checked her personal email logs from the hospital server,” Marco replied, handing over a printout. “Three days ago, Elena flagged a massive discrepancy in the hospital’s narcotic and experimental drug logs. She sent an internal memo directly to Dr. Vance, asking for an audit. She thought it was an administrative error.”

Dante closed his eyes, a cold dread washing over him. Elena wasn't collateral damage. She was a target. She had unwittingly uncovered a multi-million dollar smuggling pipeline running directly through her hospital, operated by her own superior and protected by the Marcone crime family. The Russian courier had been trying to extract her or use her as leverage against Vance when the Marcone hitmen ambushed them both.

“They wanted her dead because she has a conscience,” Dante said, the realization tearing at his chest.

Suddenly, a sharp alarm pierced the quiet of the medical wing. Through the glass, Dante saw Elena’s monitor spike wildly. Her heart rate was climbing into dangerous territory, her chest heaving beneath the sterile gown.

Dr. Richardson rushed into the room, shouting orders to the nurses. “She’s crashing! Her oxygen saturation is dropping—we have an air embolism or a delayed pneumothorax! Prepare to intubate again!”

Dante pushed through the doors, ignoring a nurse who tried to hold him back. He stood at the foot of the bed, watching the love of his life—the only woman who had ever looked past his terrifying aura to find a man worth saving—struggle for every breath.

Elena’s eyes fluttered open, glassy with fever and heavy sedation. She couldn't speak through the oxygen mask, but her gaze locked onto Dante. In the midst of the chaos, the machines blaring and doctors shouting, her eyes remained remarkably clear. She lifted a trembling, IV-bruised hand toward him.

Dante stepped forward, catching her hand in both of his. “I’m here, Elena. I’m right here. You’re safe.”

Her lips moved against the plastic of the mask, whispering words he couldn't hear but could read perfectly: “They... know... Vance...”

“I know,” Dante told her, squeezing her hand with desperate tenderness. “I know everything. I’m going to take care of it. I need you to fight. Do you hear me? Fight like you fought for my nephew.”

As if his voice were an anchor pulling her back from the edge of an abyss, Elena’s erratic heart rate began to slow. The monitor’s frantic screeching settled back into a steady, rhythmic cadence. Her eyes closed again, drifting back into a medically induced sleep, but her fingers remained loosely curled around Dante’s hand.

Dr. Richardson wiped the sweat from his forehead, staring at the monitor in disbelief. “Her vitals are stabilizing. I don't know how, but... she’s holding on.”

Dante looked down at Elena, his face turning into a mask of absolute certainty. He gently laid her hand back on the mattress and turned to Marco, who was waiting at the door.

“Gather the men,” Dante ordered, his voice devoid of emotion. “We are going to pay a visit to Dr. Vance. And then, we are going to erase the Marcone family from New York.”
