Chapter 3: An Eye for an Eye

Chapter 3: An Eye for an Eye

By 2:00 AM the following night, New York City was on high alert. The police department was scrambling to contain a series of coordinated, bloodless takedowns across the boroughs. Dante Morelli wasn't killing indiscriminately; he was systematically dismantling the infrastructure of everyone who had a hand in Elena’s suffering.

Dr. Victor Vance was packing a leather briefcase in his penthouse apartment overlooking Central Park when the locks on his front door didn't just turn—the entire frame splintered inward.

Marco entered first, throwing a heavy silencer-equipped pistol onto the marble kitchen island. Dante walked in behind him, casually unbuttoning his overcoat.

Vance stumbled backward, knocking over a crystal decanter of scotch. “Morelli... please. I don't know what you think I’ve done—”

“You are a doctor,” Dante said, pulling out a chair and sitting down with terrifying grace. “You took an oath to do no harm. Yet, you signed off on contaminated, experimental drugs that were tested on unsuspecting patients, all to line your pockets with Marcone money. And when a nurse—a real healer—noticed the discrepancies, you gave her schedule to a family of killers.”

“I didn't have a choice!” Vance sobbed, dropping to his knees. “Don Marcone... he threatened my family! He told me if I didn't eliminate the paper trail, he would kill my daughter!”

Dante leaned forward, his eyes burning with an unholy fire. “You sacrificed Elena to save your own skin. You chose wrong.”

Dante nodded to Marco, who picked up Vance’s phone and forced the doctor’s thumb against the biometrics to unlock it. Within minutes, Tony had transferred every piece of incriminating evidence from Vance’s personal cloud storage directly to the federal prosecution database, along with a blind copy to Detectives Chen and Reeves.

“You aren't going to die tonight, Victor,” Dante said, standing up and smoothing his suit jacket. “Death is too clean for a man who poisons children for profit. You are going to spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary where the Marcones cannot reach you to protect you, but my men can always reach you to remind you of what you did.”

As Marco dragged the weeping doctor out to be delivered anonymously to the federal courthouse gates, Dante’s phone rang. It was the secure line from his estate.

“Mr. Morelli,” Dr. Richardson’s voice came through, uncharacteristically tense. “Elena is awake. She’s breathing on her own. But she’s asking for you. And... there’s a complication.”

Dante’s heart skipped a beat. “What complication?”

“She remembers everything from the parking lot. She knows who shot her. It wasn't just a random hitman, Dante. She recognized one of them. It was Sal Marcone—the Don’s youngest son. He did it to prove himself to his father.”

Dante’s grip on the phone tightened until the glass screen cracked beneath his thumb. “Keep her calm, Doctor. I’m coming back.”

As he stepped out of the penthouse, the sky over Manhattan began to turn a bruised purple, signaling the arrival of a cold, unforgiving dawn. The final pieces of the chessboard were moving, and Dante knew that to ensure Elena’s safety permanently, he had to cut the head off the snake.
