Chapter 6 - The Long Cold Restructure

The months following the arrest of Victor Hale saw the West Coast empire undergo a quiet, bloodless revolution. Kenji Kato didn't launch a turf war; he launched an audit.
Supported by the federal evidence and Hannah’s financial maneuvers, Vance International—the new corporate entity the Kato family established to distance themselves from the old syndicates—absorbed the legitimate shipping lanes and logistics networks of the entire Puget Sound. The underground gambling rooms were closed, replaced by commercial real estate investments in Bellevue and South Lake Union.
The Gold Finch remained closed for three weeks for renovations. When the heavy security gates were finally pulled up on a bright, crisp spring morning, the café looked different. The white marble counters were the same, but the private side door had been replaced with thick, reinforced glass framed by dark wrought iron, surrounded by planters of fresh white jasmine.
Annie stood behind the counter, wearing a new, tailored hunter green server dress, her hair neatly arranged into a soft braid. She was no longer an invisible college kid working for tuition; she had been appointed the general manager of the café, her name written in small, elegant gold lettering on the glass door beneath Maya’s.
At exactly 8:00 AM, the private line on the counter rang.
"Good morning, Vance International," Annie answered, her voice confident and smooth.
"Miller," Kenji’s voice came through the receiver, low and rumbling, but the harsh edge was completely gone, replaced by a deep, familiar warmth. "The board meeting in Tokyo has just concluded. The shipping merger is approved. The legitimate assets are secure."
"Congratulations, Mr. Kato," Annie said, a genuine smile breaking across her face as she wiped the counter with a clean towel. "Does that mean you're finally coming home?"
"I’m landing at Sea-Tac in an hour," Kenji said. "Tell Morimoto to prepare the kitchen. I want a bowl of okayu before the executive briefing."
"The okayu isn't on the menu for executives, sir," Annie teased softly, her blue eyes dancing with a hint of her old stubbornness. "That’s a special order."
"I know," Kenji whispered, his voice dropping into a frequency that made her pulse skip a beat. "I’ll see you in an hour, Annie."

When the private town car pulled up to the curb sixty minutes later, Kenji stepped out into the spring sunshine. He wore a sharp gray suit, his stride long and commanding, but as he walked through the door of The Gold Finch, his eyes didn't track the security men or the corners of the room. He looked straight at the counter, where the shy waitress who had broken every rule was waiting for him with a warm bowl of rice and a wooden spoon.
The empire had trembled, the old throne had burned, but inside the small café on the corner, the world was finally clean.
