CHAPTER 3: The Price of Purity

CHAPTER 3: The Price of Purity
By 8:00 PM that evening, the high-rise executive penthouse of the Vance Global Tower looked more like a high-tech sanctuary than a corporate fortress. The floor-to-ceiling glass windows offered a panoramic view of the glittering city skyline, but inside, the atmosphere was warm and quiet.
Chloe sat on a massive velvet sofa, happily eating a bowl of mac-and-cheese prepared by Alexander's private chef, her stuffed rabbit tucked securely under her arm. Sitting beside her, looking incredibly small and out of place in the multi-million-dollar apartment, was Clara. She was still wearing her faded employee shoes, though Alexander had insisted she wrap herself in a soft cashmere blanket.

Alexander walked into the living room, having changed into a comfortable charcoal sweater. He handed a crystal glass of warm tea to Clara, sitting down in the leather armchair opposite them.
"The medical team checked Chloe thoroughly," Alexander began, his eyes fixed on Clara with a deep, investigative intensity. "Aside from a mild chill and the emotional shock, she’s physically unharmed. The doctors told me that if you hadn't wrapped her in that coat and kept her calm, her asthma would have triggered a severe attack in that cold rain."
Clara took a small sip of the tea, her hands still trembling slightly. "I just did what any decent person would do, Mr. Vance. I couldn't stand by and watch someone treat a baby like an inconvenience."
"In my world, Clara, decency is a luxury commodity that nobody can afford," Alexander said, his voice carrying the weight of a man who had been betrayed by everyone he had ever trusted. "My wife passed away two years ago. Since then, countless corporate rivals, socialites, and even my own extended family have tried to use Chloe to get to my wealth. I hired the best security team money could buy, yet today, a corrupt bodyguard was paid off by my rival, Julian Sterling, to leave my daughter abandoned downtown."
Clara’s eyes widened in horror. "Someone purposely left her there? A baby?"
"Yes," Alexander's jaw clenched, the cold corporate titan reemerging for a brief second. "Sterling wanted me distracted during the board vote tomorrow so he could execute a forced merger of our shipping lines. He didn't care if my daughter froze to death on the streets, as long as it kept me away from the boardroom."
He leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his gaze locking onto Clara’s with absolute sincerity. "You lost your job, your income, and your stability today because you chose to protect my blood. I don't leave my debts unpaid, Clara. I want to offer you a position. Not as a maid, and not as a retail worker. I want you to become Chloe’s official personal guardian and coordinator. You will live here, in the penthouse, with a salary that matches my top executives. You will be answerable only to me."
Clara froze, the crystal tea glass hovering inches from her lips. "Mr. Vance... I... I don't know anything about high society or executive management. I’m just a girl from the lower districts who works retail to pay for her mother’s medical bills."
"That is exactly why you are perfect," Alexander said, a genuine, rare smile softening his handsome face. "You see my daughter as a soul, not a stock option. My wealth can buy security guards, Clara, but it cannot buy a heart. What do you say?"
May you like
Before Clara could answer, Chloe slid over the velvet sofa, climbing directly into Clara’s lap and burying her small face in her sweater. "Please stay, Clara," the little girl whispered sleepily. "The mean lady is gone, but I like your voice."
Clara looked down at the fragile child who had cost her everything this morning, and then up at the powerful billionaire who was offering her the world. Tears of relief finally spilled over her cheeks as she nodded. "Okay," she whispered. "I'll stay."
