Chapter 1: The Static of Betrayal

Chapter 1: The Static of Betrayal
The crackle of the baby monitor hung in the air like heavy smoke. For three agonizing seconds, the grand dining room of the Bennett estate was so quiet you could hear the wax dripping from the silver candelabras. Crystal glasses remained suspended mid-air. Wealthy extended family members sat paralyzed, their eyes darting wildly between the glowing plastic monitor on the sideboard and the man sitting at the table.
Jason Bennett’s face drained of color so fast it looked like a mask of grey clay. The smug, indifferent posture he had held while humiliating his wife vanished. Beside him, Margaret Bennett’s sharp smile shattered. Her manicured fingers clutched the edge of the mahogany table until her knuckles turned white.
“...move the money before she figures out about Vanessa.”

The audio looped slightly through the monitor's feedback, the voice unmistakably Jason's, recorded just an hour prior when he thought he was alone in the freshly painted nursery upstairs.
Olivia stood entirely still. Her hand remained resting on her heavy, eight-month-pregnant belly. The crushing weight of public humiliation that had threatened to break her moments ago suddenly transformed into something else: a cold, crystalline clarity. The man she had loved for four years—the man who had just sat silently while his mother called her a liar and an opportunist—wasn't just a coward. He was a thief. And he was cheating.
“Olivia,” Jason stammered, finally scraping his own chair back. He reached out a trembling hand, his voice dropping into a frantic pitch. “Olivia, wait. That’s... that’s out of context. I was just—we were talking about corporate restructuring. Vanessa is just the new portfolio manager at the firm!”
“Shut up, Jason,” Olivia said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it possessed an icy authority that instantly cut through his pathetic defense.
She turned her gaze to Margaret, whose eyes were wide with a sudden, suffocating panic. The older woman wasn't looking at Olivia anymore; she was staring at her son with a mixture of rage and profound shock. The absolute authority Margaret wielded over the multi-million-dollar Bennett Family Trust was her greatest weapon—and her son had just admitted to plotting to bleed it dry with another woman.
“It seems,” Olivia said, looking around the long table at the frozen faces of the Bennett dynasty, “that you were right about one thing, Margaret. This family is full of parasites. You just looked at the wrong person.”
Olivia didn't shed a single tear. She turned on her heel, her flats clicking softly against the polished hardwood floor as she walked out of the dining room.

“Olivia! Get back here!” Margaret roared, her maternal fury finally breaking through her shock as she turned violently toward her son. “Jason! What money? Who is Vanessa? Answer me right now!”
As the shouting exploded behind her, Olivia walked straight to the front foyer. She grabbed her winter coat and her purse from the hook. She didn't pack a bag. She didn't take the expensive jewelry Jason had bought her with his mother's allowance. She stepped out into the crisp evening air, closing the heavy oak doors of the Bennett estate behind her, leaving the empire to tear itself apart from the inside.
