Chapter 3: The Ascent through Deception

Chapter 3: The Ascent through Deception

The private service elevator creaked as it ascended past the fifty-fifth floor. The higher they climbed, the more isolated they became from the rest of the world. Olivia looked at her reflection in the polished metal wall of the elevator. The dirt on her face, the oversized clothes—she looked unrecognizable. But inside, she felt more awake than she had in years. Privilege had made her soft, blind to the vipers nesting in her own boardroom. This trial was stripping away the illusions.
"When this is over," Olivia said quietly, breaking the tension, "what happens to you, Simon?"
Simon kept his eyes on the digital floor indicator. "Men like me don't get 'happily ever -> afters,' Olivia. I’ve lived in the dark for too long. The light hurts my eyes. I just want to finish this. To make sure the sacrifice of my family wasn't entirely in vain."
"I won't let you disappear back into the streets," she said fiercely. "You saved my life."
"I told you," Simon replied softly, turning to her as the elevator slowed down. "Sometimes saving someone means hurting them first. I dragged you out of your perfect world into this hell. Don't thank me until we survive the night."
The doors slid open with a soft chime to reveal the opulent, marble-floored reception area of the penthouse suite. It was dark, illuminated only by the ambient glow of the city skyline through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
Suddenly, the overhead lights flashed on, blinding them.
"I must admit, Olivia, I expected you to be smarter than this," a cold, familiar voice echoed through the vast space.
Standing near the mahogany desk at the far end of the room was Richard Sterling, flanked by Henderson and three heavily armed mercenaries. Sterling was holding a glass of scotch, looking entirely unbothered by the late hour.
"Richard," Olivia said, her voice dripping with contempt as she stepped forward, refusing to cower. "The game is over. I know about Project Janus. I know you killed Simon’s family, and I know you tried to assassinate me today."
Sterling chuckled, a chilling sound devoid of any real mirth. "Knowing a truth and proving it are two entirely different concepts, my dear. To the world, you are currently the tragic victim of a deranged, homeless stalker—who happens to be standing right next to you. After tonight, you will have tragically succumbed to your injuries, and Simon Vance will take the blame for the entire sordid affair. The Janus system will be deployed, and the world will become a much more orderly place."
The ultimate deception is not a lie told in secret, but a narrative broadcasted to the world as the absolute truth.
"You won't get away with this, Henderson," Simon spoke up, his voice dangerously low as he stepped slightly in front of Olivia, shielding her line of fire. "You broke the code. You sold out your team for a title and a corner office."
Henderson looked away, a momentary flicker of guilt crossing his face before hardening. "The world changed, Simon. You stayed behind. I chose to survive."
"Enough dramatics," Sterling sighed, setting his glass down with a sharp clack. "End this. Make it look like a struggle."
Before the mercenaries could raise their weapons, Simon moved with blinding speed. He didn't draw a gun; instead, he threw a small, localized EMP device he had scavenged from the basement security locker directly at the central lighting junction box above them.
The device detonated with a sharp pop, plunging the entire penthouse into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Shots fired instantly, muzzle flashes illuminating the room like strobe lights. Olivia screamed as Simon tackled her to the floor, rolling her behind a thick, reinforced concrete pillar.
"Stay down!" Simon yelled over the deafening roar of gunfire. "The service terminal! Can you reach it?"
"It’s behind the painting of the harbor on the east wall!" Olivia shouted back, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Gunfire tore through the luxurious furniture, shattering glass ornaments and shredding invaluable artwork. Simon returned fire with a weapon he had stripped from the guard downstairs, providing suppressing fire to mask Olivia’s movements.
Crawling on her hands and knees through the debris, Olivia reached the east wall. With trembling fingers, she slid the massive oil painting aside to reveal a hidden, retro-fitted biometric terminal. She pressed her palm against the glass panel.
System Authorization Required, a digital voice chimed softly.

"Come on, come on..." she whispered, typing in her father’s old override sequence.
A sharp gasp cut through the darkness nearby. Olivia looked over her shoulder just as a muzzle flash illuminated the space. Simon was on one knee, clutching his side. Blood was already seeping through his fingers. He had taken a bullet meant for her.
