Chapter 4: The Brink of Ruin

Chapter 4: The Brink of Ruin

"Simon!" Olivia cried out, her heart shattering at the sight of her protector falling.
"Finish it!" Simon roared, coughing up blood but refusing to drop his weapon. He fired two more rounds, forcing Henderson and the remaining mercenary to dive for cover behind the executive desk. "Don't look at me! Look at the screen!"
Olivia turned back to the terminal, tears blurring her vision. The drama of her survival had reached its absolute breaking point. She couldn't let him die. She wouldn't let Sterling win.
The terminal screen flashed green: Access Granted. Mirroring Mainframe Data.
A progress bar appeared: Downloading Project Janus Source Code & Internal Memos... 45%... 60%...
"She's at the terminal!" Sterling screamed from the darkness, his composed demeanor completely disintegrating into frantic panic. "Kill her! Destroy the terminal!"
Henderson broke cover, rushing toward Olivia with his weapon raised. But Simon, utilizing the last ounce of his strength, lunged forward, tackling Henderson around the waist. The two men crashed heavily into a glass coffee table, shattering it into thousands of lethal shards. They wrestled desperately in the dark, a brutal, visceral fight for survival born of a five-year-old betrayal.
90%... 95%... Download Complete, the terminal beeped.
Olivia ripped the encrypted flash drive from the terminal port. At that exact moment, the penthouse emergency backup generators kicked in, flooding the room with a dim, red hazard light.
The scene before her was horrific. Simon lay on his back, his face bruised and bloodied, while Henderson held a heavy glass shard over his throat. Sterling was standing a few feet away, aiming a revolver directly at Olivia’s chest.
"Give me the drive, Olivia," Sterling hissed, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "Give it to me, or I will paint this room with your brains right now."
Olivia stood tall, holding the flash drive tightly in her hand. Her fear had completely vanished, replaced by a cold, unyielding resolve.
"You think you’ve won, Richard?" she said, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "Look around you. You’ve turned my father’s legacy into a slaughterhouse. But you forgot one thing about our network architecture."
Sterling frowned, his finger tightening on the trigger. "What are you talking about?"
"The bypass terminal doesn't just download data," Olivia explained, a small, victorious smile touching her lips. "It automatically broadcasts any extracted data to every major media outlet and federal agency via an independent satellite uplink the moment the download finishes. It’s an automated dead-man's switch built by my father during the tech crisis of '08."
As if on cue, Sterling's personal phone began to buzz violently in his pocket. Then Henderson’s radio crackled to life with the frantic voice of the downstairs security team.
"Sir! Sir! The news... it's everywhere! The Janus files, the assassination contracts, the financial ledgers... they’re broadcasting it live on every major network! The FBI is already entering the lobby!"
Sterling staggered backward, his face draining of all color. The revolver trembled in his hand. His empire of lies had collapsed in a single heartbeat.
"No... no, this is impossible," Sterling muttered, completely broken.
Taking advantage of the distraction, Simon drove his elbow into Henderson’s jaw, knocking the man unconscious. He scrambled to his feet, instantly drawing his weapon and aiming it directly at Sterling's head.
"Drop the gun, Richard," Simon said, his voice cold as ice. "It’s over."
Sterling looked at Simon, then at Olivia, and finally out the window at the flashing red and blue lights of dozens of federal vehicles completely surrounding the base of the tower. Realizing there was no escape, the revolver slipped from his numb fingers, clattering uselessly against the marble floor.
Olivia rushed to Simon’s side, catching him just as his legs finally gave out from blood loss. She held him tightly against her, her tears mixing with the blood on his jacket.
"You did it," she whispered. "We did it."

"You... saved us," Simon murmured, his eyelids fluttering closed as the sound of federal agents breaching the penthouse doors echoed through the corridor. "Sometimes... help looks strange..."
"Don't you dare close your eyes, Simon Vance," Olivia commanded, her voice fierce with love and gratitude. "You’re going to live. That's an order."
