Sophia Bennett had only been working at the Caldwell estate for three days.
At twenty-four, she was the youngest maid in the mansion and the lowest-ranking employee.
The other staff rarely spoke to her.
But she noticed things.

The kind everyone else ignored.
That morning, while cleaning the library, she accidentally knocked over a stack of books.
The loud crash echoed through the room.

The boy simply sat by the window staring outside.

"Poor child," one of the housekeepers whispered.
"Seven years and he still can't hear a thing."
Sophia nodded.
At least, that's what she thought.

A silver serving tray slipped from a nearby table and hit the marble floor behind Noah.
The noise was deafening.

Sophia saw him flinch.
It lasted less than a heartbeat.

Noah had heard it.

Every medical report in the mansion claimed the boy was profoundly deaf.

Something tiny.
Something dark.
Something no larger than a grain of rice.
At first she thought it was wax.
