Chapter 4: The Strategic Counter-Strike

Chapter 4: The Strategic Counter-Strike

The following morning, the executive boardroom on the 54th floor of the Vance Global Tower was filled with the sharp aroma of espresso and the heavy tension of an impending corporate execution. Arthur Vance stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his hands clasped behind his back as he looked out over the foggy Chicago skyline. He had traded his wedding tuxedo for a sharp, charcoal-gray three-piece suit, looking every bit the ruthless titan the market feared.

Marcus, his lead general counsel, entered the room with a thick leather bound folder.

“The audit of Holloway Logistics is complete, Mr. Vance,” Marcus announced, placing the documents on the glass table. “It’s much worse than we anticipated. Julian Holloway wasn't just using corporate funds for his wedding. Over the past eighteen months, he and his father have systematically funneled three.eight million dollars into a series of shell companies registered in Delaware to cover their personal losses in a failed real estate venture in the North Loop.”

Arthur didn't turn around. “Have the authorities been notified?”

“The financial crimes division is reviewing the files as we speak,” Marcus replied. “We can initiate criminal charges by noon. However, Charles Holloway is currently downstairs in the reception area. He’s been there since 6:00 AM, begging for an audience. He brought his daughter-in-law, Vanessa.”

Arthur’s lips curled into a cold smile. “Bring them up. But leave the lawyers outside. I want this to be a family meeting.”

Two minutes later, the heavy mahogany doors opened, and Charles Holloway stepped into the room. He was a man who looked like he had aged ten years in a single night. His posture was shattered, his tie askew, a far cry from the proud patriarch who had toasted his son’s fortune the night before. Behind him followed Vanessa, her face pale, devoid of the glamorous confidence she had flaunted at the altar. She was dressed in a simple black dress, her eyes red from a night of hysterical weeping.

“Mr. Vance,” Charles gasped, his voice trembling as he stepped toward the table. “Please, I beg of you. Don't destroy my family’s name. Thirty years... I gave thirty years to this firm. My son... he’s a fool. He was blinded by vanity, trying to impress this... this woman’s social circle.”

Charles swung around, glaring at Vanessa with a raw, vicious hatred that made her flinch. “It was her! She’s the one who insisted on the five-star venue, the imported roses, the diamond bracelets! She told Julian that her family needed to see a display of true wealth to put her sister in her place!”

Vanessa trembled, tears spilling down her cheeks as she looked at Arthur. “Arthur... please. I didn't know. Clara never told us. If I had known you were... who you are, I would never have said those things. We’re sisters! We share the same blood! You can’t let your own family go to prison!”

Arthur slowly turned around, his movements calm and deliberate. He walked to the head of the table, resting his palms flat against the polished glass.

“Sisters, Vanessa?” Arthur asked, his voice dangerously low. “Where was that sisterly blood when you forced Clara to wear a dress she bought from a thrift store to your engagement party? Where was that blood when you told your wedding guests that she was a parasite who married a penniless loser just to make yourself look like a queen?”

He stepped closer to her, his gray eyes piercing through her defensive mask.

“You didn't care about blood last night. You wanted an execution. You wanted to watch your younger sister weep in front of a crowd of strangers because it fed your pathetic, bloated ego. Well, Vanessa... you got your execution. It just happened to be your own.”

“Arthur, please!” Vanessa sobbed, dropping to her knees just as her husband had done the night before. She reached out to grasp the edge of his suit jacket, but Arthur stepped back, completely out of her reach. “I’ll apologize to her! I’ll get down on my knees in front of the whole world! Just don't take the house... don't let them arrest Julian!”

“The house in Gold Coast belongs to Vance Global now, Vanessa,” Arthur said smoothly, leaning back against his chair. “The loan Julian used to secure the deed was fraudulent. The paperwork has already been processed. You have until midnight tonight to clear out your personal belongings.”

He looked at Charles Holloway, his expression softening by a fraction of an inch. “Charles, out of respect for your three decades of service, I will not press corporate charges against you personally. Your retirement package is canceled, but you will remain out of a federal penitentiary. Your son, however, will face the full weight of the justice system.”

“Thank you, Mr. Vance,” Charles whispered, his shoulders slumping as he turned and walked out of the room without looking back at his daughter-in-law once.

May you like

Vanessa lay on the plush carpet of the boardroom, her world completely collapsed around her. She looked up at Arthur, her voice a broken, raspy whisper. “What am I supposed to do, Arthur? I have nothing left.”

“Then I suggest you do what you always expected Clara to do,” Arthur said coldly, reaching for his fountain pen to sign the termination papers. “Learn to live with scraps.”
