Chapter 5: The Purging of the Past

Chapter 5: The Purging of the Past

The late afternoon sun cast long, elegant shadows across the terrace of the Vance estate. Clara sat at a small wrought-iron table, a cup of Earl Grey tea cooling in front of her as she watched the waves of Lake Michigan crash against the stone seawall below. She had spent the day walking through the estate’s historic greenhouse, finding a strange, peaceful comfort in the simple beauty of the soil and the plants—things that didn't care about wealth or corporate titles.

The heavy glass doors of the terrace slid open, and Evelyn Carter—Clara’s mother—stepped out onto the stone tiles. She was clutching an expensive leather handbag like a shield, her eyes darting nervously around the magnificent architecture of the manor.

“Clara, darling,” Evelyn said, her voice dripping with a forced, sweet maternal warmth that made Clara’s stomach twist.

“Mother,” Clara said, not standing up to greet her. “I told the security team at the gate I would only give you ten minutes. Why are you here?”

Evelyn hurried forward, dropping into the chair opposite her daughter. “Clara, it’s a disaster. Vanessa’s wedding presents have been seized by the bank. Julian is currently in a county holding cell, and Vanessa is staying in a cheap motel near the airport because she has nowhere else to go. She’s completely hysterical!”

Evelyn reached across the table, trying to grasp Clara’s hand, but Clara smoothly pulled her arm back to lift her tea cup.

“You have to speak to Arthur, Clara,” Evelyn pleaded, her eyes wide with desperation. “He listens to you. He’s completely besotted with you! Tell him to withdraw the lawsuit against Julian. Tell him to give Vanessa back her apartment. It looks terrible for our family! The country club members are already whispering... my reputation is completely ruined!”

Clara set her teacup down with a sharp, controlled click that made her mother flinch.

“Your reputation, Mother?” Clara asked, her voice clear, calm, and entirely devoid of the fear she used to carry during family dinners. “For twenty-six years, I watched you give Vanessa the best of everything. Her ballet lessons, her Ivy League tuition, her designer wardrobe. And when I wanted to go to state college to study literature, you told me there wasn't enough room in the family budget. You told me I should find a wealthy husband like my sister did because I didn't have the brains to make it on my own.”

“Clara, that was just tough love!” Evelyn stammered, her face turning a bright, defensive red. “We wanted you to be realistic!”

“No, Mother. You wanted me to be her shadow,” Clara said, standing up and walking to the edge of the terrace stone railing. “When I met Artie, I brought him to your house for Thanksgiving. You didn't even set a place for him at the main table. You made us eat in the kitchen alcove because you said his shoes looked 'too unrefined' for your dining room. Vanessa spent two hours mocking his old car while you laughed along.”

She turned around, looking at her mother with a profound sense of pity.

“Arthur Vance didn't destroy Vanessa’s life, Mother. Vanessa’s greed did. And your enabling did. You built her a pedestal out of lies and cruelty, and you shouldn't be surprised that it couldn't hold her weight when the truth arrived.”

“You’re a cold, ungrateful little monster!” Evelyn suddenly snapped, her sweet facade completely disintegrating into an ugly, furious sneer. “You think because you hit the jackpot with a billionaire husband you can look down on us? You’re still just the librarian’s assistant from Cicero! Without his money, you’re nothing!”

“I know exactly who I am without his money, Mother,” Clara said softly, a deep, unshakeable peace radiating from her eyes. “I’m the woman who was happy eating street food in the rain with the man she loved. I didn't need his billions to choose him. But Vanessa needed Julian’s title to feel alive, and now she has to find out who she is in the dark.”

Arthur stepped out onto the terrace then, his presence instantly commanding the space. He didn't say a word, but his hand settled firmly around Clara’s waist, pulling her flush against his side.

Evelyn looked at the young billionaire, her fury instantly transforming back into a terrified submission. She stood up quickly, clutching her bag to her chest. “Ten minutes are up, Mrs. Carter,” Arthur said, his voice cold and final. “My security team will show you to the gates. Do not return to this property.”

Without another word, Evelyn turned and fled through the glass doors, her heels clicking frantically against the marble interior as she vanished from their lives forever.
