The Girl at the Desk / Chapter 1 / 5

Chapter 1: The Ghost of a Memory

The air in the waiting room turned instantly to ice. The bald man, whose name was Arthur Pendelton, did not break eye contact with the girl’s wrist. The bracelet was unmistakable—a delicate silver chain with a tarnished, heart-shaped locket, engraved with the initials E.P. It belonged to Emily, his daughter, who had vanished from a local park seven years ago at the age of six. Arthur had spent nearly a decade drowning in grief, his life at a standstill, yet here was a piece of his shattered past, clinging to the wrist of a battered stranger.

“Sir, I told you to step back or I will call security!” the nurse barked, her voice rising in irritation. She finally stopped typing, her face flushing with anger at the defiance of her authority.

Arthur ignored her entirely. He took another step forward, his massive frame towering over the desk, though his posture was entirely non-threatening, softened by sheer shock. He knelt down so he was at eye level with the trembling girl. “Sweetheart,” he said, his voice cracking, a stark contrast to his intimidating appearance. “Where did you get that bracelet? Please, it’s very important.”

The girl shrank back, terrified by the sudden attention. Her hand pressed harder against her abdomen, and a sharp gasp of pain escaped her lips. Her knees buckled completely. Before she could hit the cold linoleum floor, Arthur’s massive arms caught her.

“Help her!” Arthur roared, turning his fierce gaze to the nurse. The sheer volume of his voice caused the entire waiting room to fall dead silent. “She is bleeding, she is in agony, and she has something that belonged to my missing daughter! If you don't call a doctor this exact second, I will tear this reception desk apart!”

Realizing the situation had escalated far beyond a simple vagrancy issue, the nurse’s medical instincts—or perhaps her self-preservation—finally kicked in. She slapped a red button under her desk. Within seconds, two orderlies and an emergency room physician rushed through the double doors with a gurney.

“What do we have?” the doctor asked, assessing the girl’s pale face and shallow breathing.

“Abdominal pain, possible internal trauma, signs of physical abuse,” Arthur answered rapidly, laying the unconscious girl gently onto the mattress. As the medical team began to wheel her away, Arthur grabbed the doctor’s sleeve. “I’m coming with you.”

“Are you family?” the doctor asked, trying to push forward.

“I don’t know yet,” Arthur whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. “But I’m not leaving her side.”

As they rushed into the trauma bay, the nurse at the front desk was already reaching for the phone to call the police, her hands shaking. Something dark and dangerous had just walked into her hospital, and the girl with the bruised face was the key to it all.
