Chapter 4: The Final Reckoning

“Drop the weapon!” Detective Vance shouted, firing a warning shot into the doorframe.

The assassin didn’t hesitate. He fired twice. One bullet caught Vance in the shoulder, spinning him around and sending him crashing to the floor, his gun skittering across the room. The assassin stepped into the room, raising his weapon to finish Vance, then turn it on Emily.

He underestimated Arthur.

Fueled by a father’s primal instinct to protect his child, the large man launched himself across the room. He tackled the assassin with the force of a freight train, slamming him against the medical monitors. The gun went flying into the darkness.

The two men fought brutally in the dim red light. The assassin was trained and ruthless, pulling a concealed knife and slashing at Arthur’s chest. Arthur winced as the blade cut through his shirt, but he refused to back down. He gripped the man’s wrist, twisting it until the bones cracked and the knife clattered to the floor. With a final, roaring punch, Arthur send the man crashing into the wall, knocking him completely unconscious.

Outside, the alarms were blaring. The hospital security and backup police officers flooded the hallway, bursting into the room with flashlights.

Vance, clutching his bleeding shoulder, looked up from the floor and smiled faintly. “We got him, Arthur. It’s over.”

The assassin was identified as Thomas Vance (no relation to the detective), a man who operated an illegal underground ring on the outskirts of the city. He had kept Emily hidden in a secluded basement for years, using her for forced labor. But Emily had found a moment of weakness, fought back, stolen her childhood bracelet from his safe, and run through the storm until she found the hospital.

As the police dragged the criminal away in handcuffs, the backup generators kicked in, flooding the room with warm, bright light. On the bed, Emily’s eyes slowly fluttered open.
