Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The underworld of Chicago began to bleed by nightfall. Emmett Cross didn't play by the rules of modern corporate syndicates when his family or his honor was threatened; he reverted to the ruthless tactics that had made him the undisputed king of the city.

One by one, Victor Brennon’s old associates were dragged into dark alleys, abandoned warehouses, and the backrooms of smoky clubs. Emmett didn't delegate the interrogations. He stood in the shadows himself, his presence alone enough to make hardened criminals weep and beg for mercy.

“I don’t know anything! I swear!” screamed a low-level loan shark named Jimmy, who was currently pinned against a brick wall by Marco. “Victor contacted me through an encrypted app! He just told me to distribute the fifty grand to the Harper woman! I didn't ask questions!”

Emmett stepped forward, the streetlamp illuminating his cold, unyielding features. “Where is the server he’s using to route the digital evidence, Jimmy? If you don't give me a location, you won’t survive the night.”

“The old meatpacking district!” Jimmy sobbed, his knees shaking. “The abandoned Swift & Co. plant on 43rd Street! He’s got a massive server array setup there! It’s guarded like a fortress, Emmett! He’s got mercenaries from overseas! Please, don’t kill me!”

Emmett nodded to Marco, who dropped the man to the snowy pavement. “Keep him secured,” Emmett ordered. “If he’s lying, eliminate him.”

Emmett climbed into the back of his armored SUV, where Tommy was waiting with a laptop. “The Swift & Co. plant,” Tommy said, adjusting his glasses. “It fits. It’s got deep underground basements, heavy concrete walls that block thermal imaging, and its own independent power grid left over from the city's old industrial days. If Victor is hiding anywhere, it’s there.”

“And Diana?” Emmett asked.

“If he’s keeping her alive for a confession, she’ll be in the lower levels, close to the servers so they can force her to input the final authorization codes,” Tommy reasoned. “But Emmett, going in there is a suicide mission. Victor has at least thirty heavily armed men. It’s a literal bunker.”

“Then we bring an army,” Emmett said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Call the outfit. Tell them Victor Brennon is bringing human trafficking back to Chicago under our name. Let’s see how many of our captains want that kind of filth attached to their children's futures.”

Meanwhile, back at the Cross estate, Luna sat by the fireplace in the grand library. Mrs. Ingrid had brought her a bowl of warm chicken soup, but the girl had barely touched it. Instead, she stared at the crackling flames, her mind filled with images of her mother.

“He’s a good man, Luna,” Mrs. Ingrid said softly, sitting beside her and gently rubbing her back. “Deep down, beneath all that stone and anger, Emmett Cross has a soul. He saved this city from people like Victor once before. He will save your mother.”

“My mom told me that Mr. Cross was a hero who got lost in the dark,” Luna said, her voice sounding incredibly mature for a seven-year-old. “She said he did bad things, but he never let the truly evil things touch innocent people. That’s why she sent me here.”

Mrs. Ingrid wiped a stray tear from her eye, deeply moved by the child’s faith. “Your mother is a very wise woman, sweetheart. Now, you must eat. You need to be strong for when she comes home.”

Just then, the security alarms inside the mansion began to chirp softly—a warning that someone was approaching the outer perimeter. Mrs. Ingrid stiffened, her hand immediately going to the panic button concealed under the library table.

Outside, the snow-covered trees rustled as dark silhouettes moved through the shadows, bypassing the main gate. Victor Brennon wasn't waiting for the twenty-four hours to expire. He had sent a hit squad to retrieve the girl and eliminate Emmett’s sanctuary.
