Chapter 4 - The Breach at the Estate

The silence of the estate was shattered by the sudden, deafening blast of an explosion at the rear conservatory. Glass rained down on the marble floors as four masked men, armed with silenced submachine guns, breached the mansion.

“Intruders! Section Four!” a guard shouted over the comms before his radio went dead with a wet choke.

Inside the library, Mrs. Ingrid grabbed Luna’s hand, her face pale but determined. “Come with me, Luna. Quickly!”

She hurried the little girl through a hidden panel in the mahogany bookshelves, leading into a narrow, stone-lined corridor built into the very foundations of the old house. It was a safe room pathway designed by Emmett’s father during the height of the mob wars in the nineties.

“Stay here and don’t make a sound,” Mrs. Ingrid whispered, pushing Luna into a small, reinforced chamber equipped with a monitor displaying the house’s security feeds. “I have to lock the door from the outside to make it look like a regular wall.”

“Mrs. Ingrid, no!” Luna cried softly, but the heavy steel door clicked shut, leaving her in the dim, glowing light of the surveillance monitors.

On the screens, Luna watched in horror as the masked men swept through the mansion. They were professional, moving in tactical formations, eliminating the estate’s security guards with terrifying efficiency. They reached the library, tearing down the curtains, smashing the ancient vases, looking for any sign of the child.

Suddenly, the door to the library burst open. Standing there was Tommy Vale, flanked by three of Emmett’s most lethal soldiers.

A fierce gunfight erupted within the historic room. Muzzle flashes illuminated the dark wood, and the roar of gunfire echoed through the hidden corridor, making Luna cover her ears and weep. Tommy moved like a man possessed, firing his pistol with lethal accuracy, dropping two of the intruders instantly.

But there were too many of them. Another wave of Victor’s men entered from the hallway, pinning Tommy behind the heavy oak desk.

Back in the city, Emmett was inside his SUV when his phone flashed with an automated red alert from his estate’s security system. His heart stopped.

“Tommy! Report!” Emmett roared into his radio.

Static hissed, followed by Tommy’s breathless, panicked voice. “Boss! We’re under attack! Victor’s men… they breached the conservatory! They’re looking for the girl! We’re holding them off in the library, but—”

The transmission cut out with the sound of a heavy blast.

Emmett’s eyes flared with a primal, terrifying rage. He looked at Marco, who was driving. “Turn the car around. Now!”

“But Emmett, the meatpacking plant—”

“Turn the car around, Marco!” Emmett screamed, a sound that made the seasoned driver flinch. “If anything happens to that girl, nothing else matters!”

The SUV roared through the icy streets of Chicago, blowing through red lights and dodging traffic, heading back toward the North Shore estate. Emmett gripped his weapon, his knuckles bleeding from how hard he was squeezing the grip. He had spent his entire life protecting his territory, his money, and his power. But in that moment, he realized that the only thing worth saving was the fragile piece of innocence currently hiding in the dark of his home.
