CHAPTER 2: THE SAFE FULL OF LIES

Rain poured harder.
Police lights reflected against the marble entrance of the luxury showroom.
Nobody had left.
Customers.
Employees.
Strangers.
Everyone felt as if they had suddenly become witnesses inside a story much bigger than broken crystal dishes.
Anna sat inside the old blue car while Lucas leaned against her shoulder.
The old man stood beside them, unable to stop staring at his daughter.
Every few seconds, he reached out to touch her hand as if he feared she would disappear again.
Emily remained several feet away.
Silent.
Defeated.
One police officer approached gently.
“Ma'am, are you okay?”
Anna nodded.
“Yes.”
The officer looked at her oxygen tube.
“Do you need medical assistance?”
Before she could answer, Lucas raised his hand.
“She just needs her medicine.”
The officer smiled softly.
“Okay, buddy.”
Then he turned serious.
“We need to understand what happened here.”
The old man suddenly spoke.
“There are things we need to investigate inside this store.”
Emily's eyes widened instantly.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She quickly corrected herself.
“I mean… we can do that later.”
The old man slowly turned toward her.
“Why later?”
She swallowed hard.
“Because Dad, Anna is sick.”
“Exactly.”
He stared directly into her eyes.
“That's why we won't wait anymore.”
Emily's face became pale again.
The old man addressed the police.
“There is a safe inside the manager's office.”
Emily's breathing accelerated.
“Dad…”
He ignored her.
“I want it opened.”
The officers exchanged glances.
One of them asked calmly.
“Sir, why?”
The old man answered without hesitation.
“Because my instincts are telling me seven years of lies are hidden inside.”
The entire crowd became silent.
Emily shook her head.
“This is insane.”
But nobody was listening anymore.
Everyone followed the officers back into the showroom.
The shattered crystal still covered the floor.
Employees had forgotten to clean anything.
For the first time in years, the beautiful showroom no longer looked luxurious.
It looked haunted.
The manager's office sat upstairs behind a frosted glass door.
Emily stepped in front of it.
“You can't just search my office.”
The old man stopped walking.
“Actually…”
He reached into his jacket pocket.
Everyone stared.
He pulled out a worn leather folder.
“My lawyer made me carry this years ago.”
Emily's face instantly changed.
The old man opened it.
“This building belongs to me.”
Silence.
“It always has.”
The crowd gasped.
“You're not the owner?” one employee asked Emily.
Emily couldn't answer.
The old man continued.
“I allowed Emily to manage operations.”
He looked around sadly.
“But ownership never changed.”
An employee whispered.
“She lied to all of us…”
The old man pointed toward the office.
“Open it.”
Emily's hands began shaking.
“No.”
One police officer stepped forward.
“Ma'am.”
Her voice cracked.
“No.”
“Please cooperate.”
Suddenly she exploded.
“You don't understand!”
Everyone jumped.
Tears rolled down her face.
“I worked for everything!”
Anna stared at her.
“You stole everything.”
Emily looked at her.
“No…”
Anna slowly walked into the building.
Her body was weak.
But her voice wasn't.
“I built this showroom with Dad.”
She pointed toward the shelves.
“We selected every design.”
She pointed toward the marble.
“We chose this floor together.”
Then she looked around.
“You erased me from my own life.”
Emily screamed.
“You left!”
Anna shook her head.
“No.”
“You left!”
“No.”
“You left!”
Anna finally raised her voice.
“You pushed me down a flight of stairs!”
The entire showroom froze.
Even the officers looked stunned.
Anna inhaled deeply.
“It happened seven years ago.”
She pointed at Emily.
“You were angry because Dad announced I would become co-owner.”
Emily started crying harder.
“You don't remember!”
“I remember everything.”
Anna's eyes became distant.
“The railing.”
“The vase.”
“The stairs.”
“The blood.”
“The ambulance.”
“The lies.”
Every word hit harder than the one before.
Emily slowly sat down.
Completely defeated.
The officer spoke quietly.
“Open the office.”
She handed over the key.
The lock clicked.
The office door opened.
It looked immaculate.
Too immaculate.
A large desk.
Expensive artwork.
Designer perfume.
Fresh flowers.
Nothing out of place.
But then the old man pointed.
“The safe.”
It sat hidden behind a large painting.
The officers moved the frame aside.
There it was.
A steel door.
Emily suddenly stood up.
“No!”
Everyone jumped.
She burst into panic.
“Don't open it!”
The old man stared at her.
“Why?”
She shook her head violently.
“Please.”
“Why?”
“Please…”
The officer asked for the code.
Emily remained silent.
One officer sighed.
“We'll have to force it.”
The sound of metal tools echoed through the room.
Five minutes later…
CLANK.
The safe opened.
Everyone held their breath.
The first thing they saw…
Money.
Stacks.
Thousands.
Maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Gasps filled the room.
But Anna didn't react.
She was staring at something else.
A folder.
Her name was written across the front.
ANNA CARTER.
She slowly picked it up.
Her hands trembled.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Her eyes widened.
Life insurance papers.
Property transfers.
Medical records.
Bank statements.
All forged.
Every single one.
The old man grabbed another folder.
EMILY CARTER.
He opened it.
Then his knees nearly gave out.
The papers showed millions of dollars transferred over seven years.
Money from investments.
Money from businesses.
Money from properties.
Money that belonged to Anna.
Money Emily had secretly moved into her own accounts.
The crowd gasped again.
But then Lucas pointed at something.
“Mommy.”
Everyone turned.
A small black box sat hidden underneath everything else.
Anna opened it carefully.
Inside was a silver necklace.
Her eyes instantly filled with tears.
The old man gasped.
“Oh my God.”
Anna smiled weakly.
“You kept it?”
It was a necklace her mother had given her before she died.
She thought it had been lost forever.
Then she noticed something underneath.
A letter.
She unfolded it.
The handwriting was familiar.
Emily's.
Anna began reading.
Her face slowly transformed from sadness to shock.
Then to heartbreak.
Then to tears.
The old man asked softly.
“What is it?”
Anna couldn't speak.
She handed him the letter.
His hands shook as he read.
Dear Anna,
I never wanted to hurt you.
I was jealous.
Mom loved you.
Dad trusted you.
Everyone chose you.
I spent my entire life standing in your shadow.
That day on the stairs was an accident… at first.
I reached for you.
You slipped.
Then I saw an opportunity.
And I took it.
I told everyone you abandoned us.
Every lie became easier than the truth.
Every year became harder to undo.
Now I don't know how to come back.
If you're reading this…
Everything has already fallen apart.
I'm sorry.
The old man began crying.
Employees cried.
Customers cried.
Even one of the officers quietly wiped his eyes.
Only Emily remained silent.
Broken.
Completely broken.
Lucas suddenly walked toward her.
Everyone froze.
Anna stood up immediately.
“Lucas…”
But he kept walking.
He stopped in front of Emily.
She slowly looked at him.
“Do you hate me?”
She whispered.
Lucas thought for a moment.
Then he said something nobody expected.
“My mommy says hurt people sometimes hurt other people.”
Emily immediately burst into tears.
“But…”
Lucas continued.
“She also says everyone can choose to be better tomorrow.”
The room went silent.
A seven-year-old child had just said what none of the adults could.
Emily broke down completely.
Years of lies.
Years of guilt.
Years of pretending.
Gone.
The old man looked around the office one last time.
Then his eyes landed on another document hidden underneath the stack.
He picked it up.
His face instantly changed.
“What…”
Anna looked at him.
“What is it?”
He slowly raised the paper.
His entire body shaking.
“This says your illness…”
He couldn't finish.
Anna stood up.
“Dad?”
He handed her the document.
Her eyes widened immediately.
It wasn't another lie.
It was a medical report.
One she had never seen before.
A specialist's signature sat at the bottom.
A treatment had existed all along.
A treatment that could save her life.
And someone had been secretly paying for it every month for seven years.
Anna whispered one trembling question.
“Who did this?”
At that exact moment…
The front doors of the showroom opened.
A mysterious man in a dark coat walked inside carrying another folder.
He stared directly at Anna.
May you like
Then he said six words that stunned everyone.
“Your mother asked me to come.”
