Chapter 2: The Wheels of Retribution

Chapter 2: The Wheels of Retribution

The sound of the helicopter blades tearing through the Manhattan skyline was the herald of an approaching storm. Within minutes of Aria’s quiet confrontation, the atmosphere inside Aurelia Jewels had transformed from an elite boutique into a clinical execution chamber. No one was allowed to leave. Two towering security men in dark suits, bearing the crest of the Sterling Global security detachment, stood like statues before the main entrance.

Vanessa Montgomery sat on a plush velvet sofa, her pink dress now looking like a garish joke against her pale, sweating skin. Her friends had quietly moved to the opposite corner of the room, completely abandoning her in a desperate attempt to sever any association with the impending disaster. They were deleting messages, pretending they had merely been innocent bystanders.

The private elevator at the back of the boutique dinged. The doors slid open to reveal Arthur Sterling.

He did not look like a man who spent his time counting pennies. He was a tall, silver-haired gentleman with an intense, piercing gaze that had caused prime ministers and economic boards to tremble. He wore a simple, dark tailored suit, free of any loud branding, but the sheer gravity of his presence made the entire room instinctively hold its breath.

Arthur didn't look at the manager. He didn't look at the glittering displays of gold and platinum. His eyes locked onto his daughter. He walked over to her with long, purposeful strides, his face softening only when he reached her side. He saw the faint red mark on her left cheek, and for a fraction of a second, a flash of pure, primordial fury crossed his features.

"Aria," Arthur said, his voice deep and resonant. "Are you hurt?"

"I am fine, Father," Aria replied quietly, placing a comforting hand on his arm. "The shock has passed. But I believe these people require your attention."

Arthur turned slowly, his gaze sweeping across the room until it landed on Vanessa, who looked as if she wanted the marble floor to swallow her alive. Harrison stood to the side, sweat dripping onto his collar, holding a digital tablet with trembling hands.

"Lord Sterling," Harrison began, his voice shaking. "We have compiled the data you requested. The woman who assaulted Miss Sterling is Vanessa Montgomery. Her husband is Richard Montgomery, the Chief Executive Officer of Montgomery Logistics."

Arthur’s expression remained completely unreadable, which made it infinitely more terrifying. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a sleek, black satellite phone. He dialed a single-digit speed dial.

"Edward," Arthur spoke into the phone, his tone flat and conversational. "Initiate Phase One against Montgomery Logistics. Terminate all shipping leases with our European ports. Recall the short-term capital loans we extended to their board last quarter. Call the primary creditors and inform them that Sterling Global is pulling all structural guarantees."

He paused for a second, listening to the voice on the other end, before adding:

"And buy out their primary competitor by the end of the hour. Flood the market with their short shares. I want the Montgomery name erased from the New York Stock Exchange before the closing bell."

Vanessa let out a strangled shriek, throwing herself off the sofa and landing on her knees before Arthur. The sequins on her dress scraped against the floor, a pathetic echo of the humiliation she had forced upon Aria just twenty minutes prior.

"Please! Lord Sterling, I beg of you!" Vanessa cried, her manicured nails digging into the air as she gestured wildly. "It was a mistake! A horrible, tragic mistake! I didn't know who she was! If I had known she was your daughter, I would never have... I would have treated her like royalty! Please don't ruin my husband! He had nothing to do with this!"

Arthur looked down at her, his eyes cold and devoid of any human warmth.

"That is exactly your biggest mistake, Mrs. Montgomery," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a dangerous whisper that cut through her hysterics. "You would have treated her with respect only because of my name, because of my bank account. But a truly educated person treats the beggar in the street with the exact same dignity they afford a king. You did not fail because you insulted a Sterling. You failed because you proved yourself to be a monster to someone you thought was defenseless."

He looked away from her, addressing Harrison. "The footage from the security cameras. Secure it. My legal team will file formal charges of assault, defamation, and emotional distress by noon. Ensure she is removed from these premises immediately. Her presence stains the air my daughter breathes."
