Chapter 4: The Emerald Mask

Chapter 4: The Emerald Mask

The Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria was a sea of glittering emerald gowns, black tuxedos, and the soft chime of crystal glasses. The Emerald Ball was the event of the season, a place where fortunes were displayed and social hierarchies were reinforced. Yet, tonight, the whispers among the guests were centered on a single topic: the destruction of the Montgomery empire.

Vanessa Montgomery arrived with her husband, Richard. She had chosen a dark, conservative green velvet dress, a desperate attempt to look dignified and remorseful. But the moment they stepped into the ballroom, the social execution began. People who had drunk champagne at their house the previous week suddenly turned their backs, deeply engrossed in conversation with anyone else. The circle of isolation around them was palpable.

"Just stay quiet," Richard hissed to his wife, his jaw tight. "If the Sterlings arrive, we walk over, we get on our knees if we have to, and we beg for Aria’s forgiveness in front of everyone. Our survival depends on her pity."

At 9:00 PM, the herald announced the arrival of the evening's guest of honor.

"Presenting Lord Arthur Sterling and Miss Aria Sterling."

The double doors opened, and the ballroom fell into a respectful silence. Aria walked beside her father, and a collective gasp echoed through the crowd. She was no longer the girl in the simple white sundress. She wore a breathtaking, custom-made gown of midnight blue silk that seemed to absorb the light of the chandeliers. Around her neck sat the very diamond necklace from Aurelia Jewels—the one Vanessa had thrown to the ground. It had been meticulously cleaned and refitted, its diamonds flashing with a brilliant, blinding fire.

Aria’s hair was styled in an elegant updo, revealing the clean, unmarred lines of her face. She looked regal, a true queen of the modern era, embodying the perfect blend of immense wealth and profound humility.

Vanessa felt a cold hand wrap around her heart. Seeing Aria looking so magnificent, wearing the very piece of art she had claimed Aria couldn't afford the box for, was a psychological blow that shattered what little dignity she had left.

Richard grabbed Vanessa’s arm, dragging her through the crowd toward the Sterlings. The guests parted like the Red Sea, sensing the impending climax of the city's greatest corporate drama.

"Lord Sterling! Miss Sterling!" Richard called out, his voice desperate as he stopped a few feet away from them. He immediately bowed deeply. "Please, allow us a moment of your time."

Vanessa stood beside him, her body trembling. The arrogance that had defined her for years was entirely gone, replaced by a desperate, hollow shell.

"Miss Aria," Vanessa whispered, her eyes filling with tears that were finally real—born of the total destruction of her reality. "I am sorry. I am so deeply sorry for what I did to you. I was blind. I was foolish. I judged you by your clothes, and I treated you with an ugliness that I cannot justify. Please... do not destroy my family completely."

The entire ballroom watched, breath bated, waiting for the young heiress’s response.
