Chapter 4: The Country Club Execution

Chapter 4: The Country Club Execution

The high-society circles of Charlotte and Raleigh live for golf tournaments, charity galas, and real estate gossip, but they love a spectacular, public downfall even more. Within forty-eight hours of Rachel Vance's phone call, the news that Bryce Callahan had been legally evicted from his own mansion while on a stolen vacation had spread through every country club from Quail Hollow to Prestonwood.
Eleanor Callahan tried to mount an immediate counter-offensive the moment they returned from Hilton Head. Refusing to believe that a "girl from a public university background" could outmaneuver her legacy, she called an emergency meeting of her family’s financial advisors at the exclusive dining room of the Myers Park Country Club.
She sat at the long, linen-covered table, her pearls clutched tightly in her manicured hand, while Bryce paced furiously back and forth across the thick Persian carpet. Savannah sat in the corner, scrolling through social media with an expression of pure, unadulterated panic.
"This is an outrage!" Eleanor hissed, slamming her gold monogrammed fountain pen onto the table. "Bryce, you told me your name was on the building contracts! You told me that girl was just an ornament you brought in to manage the interior design!"
"She told me it was a standard lease-to-own corporate structure, Mom!" Bryce shouted, his face an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. "I didn't check the root filing records of P.L. Sanctuary Holdings! Why would I? She’s a pharmacist’s daughter! She wasn't supposed to know how to hide an asset of that size!"
"Well, she hid it perfectly," their chief financial advisor said, sliding a thick folder of corporate registry documents across the table. "And it’s worse than you think, Eleanor. We’ve just received a formal audit notice from the state revenue department. The forty-two thousand dollars Bryce transferred from the shared account during Paige’s labor? She didn't just flag it as marital waste. She filed a formal criminal complaint for grand larceny and unauthorized electronic fund conversion."
"She wouldn't dare!" Savannah shrieked, looking up from her phone. "Mom, look at this! Paige just posted a public update on her architectural firm’s professional page! She’s showcasing the Raleigh house as her firm's primary corporate asset, and the comments are filled with local developers congratulating her on her new design contract with the city's historical preservation board!"
Before Eleanor could respond, the heavy double doors of the private dining room were pushed open.
The low, polite murmur of the country club dining room outside dropped into a sudden, suffocating silence as Paige stepped through the threshold. She wasn't wearing the tired, oversized maternity clothes Bryce had left her in. She wore a stunning, impeccably tailored emerald-green linen power suit, her dark hair styled into a sharp, flawless bob. In her arms, resting securely in a luxury silk carrier, was Clara, sleeping soundly, completely oblivious to the war surrounding her.
Flanking Paige were Rachel Vance and two uniformed deputies from the Wake County Sheriff's Department.
"Paige!" Bryce gasped, taking a step back from the table, his knee knocking into his chair and sending a silver water pitcher rattling to the floor. The sound was an exact, poetic echo of the broken plate from their last morning together. "How did you get in here? This is a private member facility!"
"The Lin Corporate Logistics Group purchased the land lease for this entire country club facility three hours ago, Bryce," Paige said, her voice smooth, calm, and perfectly carrying across the silent room. "Technically, my family’s firm is now your mother’s primary landlord. I believe members are required to maintain an unblemished credit standing to retain their dining privileges."
She walked forward, stopping exactly two feet from Eleanor, who sat frozen like an ice sculpture. Paige reached into her designer briefcase, pulled out a stack of red corporate document folders, and laid them gently on the table beside Eleanor’s untouched salad.
"The vacation is over, Eleanor," Paige said softly, her eyes locked onto the older woman’s wide, terrified gaze. "I brought you some fresh documentation. I know how much you value order."
The lead deputy stepped forward, pulling a formal legal warrant from his coat. "Bryce Callahan. You are being placed under emergency arrest for grand larceny, computer trespass, and the unauthorized conversion of corporate lines of credit associated with the Larkin Architectural Network. You have the right to remain silent."
"No! No, please! Mom, do something!" Bryce whimpered, his face turning a ghastly, pathetic shade of pale as the deputies stepped behind him, pulling his arms back and clicking the steel handcuffs shut around his wrists in full view of his family’s oldest social peers. "Paige, please! We have a daughter! You can't do this to the father of your child!"
May you like
"You remembered you had a daughter three days after she was born, Bryce," Paige whispered, leaning down until her eyes were level with his sweating, trembling face. "When you changed that code and left us in the rain, you told me to act like a mother and work it out. This is me working it out. Every single debt you’ve run up in my name over the last five years has just been called by the bank. Your car lease was revoked this morning. Your corporate credentials are dead. You aren't a Callahan prince anymore, Bryce. You're a convicted thief."
As the deputies dragged a sobbing Bryce out through the center aisle of the country club dining room, Eleanor slumped back into her leather chair, her face an unreadable block of stone, watching her family's carefully manufactured legacy disintegrate before her eyes.
