Chapter 5: The Insolvency of Pride

The months that followed the country club execution were a masterclass in absolute financial liquidation. Without Paige’s architectural income to subsidize their lifestyle, the Callahan family trust was revealed for what it truly was: an empty shell built on old country-club credit lines, unpaid secondary mortgages, and the desperate social climbing of Eleanor Callahan.
Bryce’s legal team tried to fight the grand larceny charges, attempting to argue that the forty-two thousand dollars was a "standard familial distribution of marital funds." But Rachel Vance introduced the forensic time-stamps of the wire transfer into evidence. The digital logs proved that Bryce had authorized the transaction at the exact minute Paige’s surgical team was entering the operating room, using her personal biometrics while she was incapacitated.
Faced with a mandatory ten-year minimum sentence for corporate identity theft and state financial fraud, Bryce broke. He signed a comprehensive, unbending divorce settlement that stripped him of every potential claim to Paige’s properties, her business, or her assets. In exchange for avoiding a maximum-security state penitentiary sentence, he accepted a five-year suspended sentence, a permanent felony fraud record, and a mandatory monthly child support order that would consume seventy percent of whatever minimum-wage income he could secure for the next eighteen years.
As for Eleanor and Savannah, the fallout was total. The secondary beach house in Hilton Head—which they had proudly showcased in their texts to Paige—was revealed to be heavily leveraged against Eleanor’s primary home in Charlotte. When the banks called the secondary notes following Bryce’s felony conviction, both properties went into sudden, catastrophic foreclosure.
By the time Clara celebrated her first birthday, the woman who had proudly told Paige that her "lease on their goodwill had expired" was living in a small, two-bedroom rented retirement apartment in rural South Carolina, entirely excluded from the country club rosters and old-money networks that had once fed her vanity.
But inside the Raleigh estate on Cedar Ridge Road, the architecture of life had entered a beautiful, unstoppable bloom.
The house was no longer filled with the stiff, artificial furniture Eleanor had selected to project an image of old-money heritage. Paige had completely remodeled the interior, replacing the cold marble with warm, reclaimed white oak timbers, expansive glass panels that flooded the rooms with natural sunlight, and a sweeping, vibrant indoor garden that smelled of fresh jasmine and lavender.
The green nursery she had painted with her own hands while pregnant was now a sprawling, beautiful playroom filled with wooden toys, bright canvases of children’s art, and the constant, magnificent sound of Clara’s bubbling laughter.
Paige stood by the massive kitchen island, wearing a comfortable linen shirt and jeans, watching the morning light hit the polished hardwood floors. Her body was healed, her mind was peaceful, and the shadow of the Callahan family had been entirely washed away from her home.
"Paige," a deep, warm voice called from the back patio door.
She turned around, a genuine, beautiful smile lighting up her face as Thomas walked into the kitchen, carrying a basket of fresh organic strawberries from the local farmers' market. Thomas was the structural engineer Paige’s firm had partnered with six months ago to design a new, eco-friendly community center for low-income families in downtown Raleigh. He was a man with calm, incredibly kind hazel eyes, strong hands that knew the real weight of labor, and a quiet, unshakeable integrity that had never needed a country-club badge to validate his worth.
He didn't look at Paige as an asset to exploit, or a servant to train. He looked at her as an equal partner, a brilliant force of design, and his entire world.

"Clare is almost awake," Thomas smiled, setting the basket down on the counter and stepping up behind her, wrapping his strong, warm arms gently around her waist. He pressed a soft, reassuring kiss to the side of her neck, his presence a solid, safe anchor that completely erased the lingering ghosts of her past. "I saw her rolling over on the monitor a minute ago."
"Let’s go get her together," Paige murmured, leaning her head back against his shoulder, breathing in his clean, familiar scent of cedarwood and fresh rain. "The morning light is perfect today."
