Chapter 3 - The Crimson Audit

Brandon’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. He stared at the silver badge pinned to the jacket of the lead marshal. "Who the hell are you? This is a private medical room. You can't just barge in here."

"I am Arthur Vance, Special Counsel for the California Medical Fraud Task Force," the man in the suit said. He didn't look at Brandon; he walked straight to the side of my bed, glancing down at the three bassinets with a look of profound respect before turning his attention to me. "Mrs. Miller, I apologize for the timing of our arrival. We have been monitoring the digital servers at the Crane Fertility Center for three weeks. The moment your hospital triggered the genetic mismatch alert, our warrants became live."

Vanessa stepped forward, her voice rising in an anxious shriek. "Warrants for what? This is a domestic dispute! Brandon is a billionaire, he owns the Miller Development Group. You can't touch him!"

Arthur Vance finally turned his gaze toward Vanessa, his eyes cold and entirely unbothered by her wealth. "Ms. Cole, forty-eight hours ago, your private bank accounts received a wire transfer of two million dollars from a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands. That money was traced back to the illegal sale of medical biological assets harvested without consent from the Crane facility. You aren't just a mistress; you are a co-conspirator in a federal grand larceny and human trafficking scheme."

Vanessa gasped, dropping her Birkin bag onto the floor. The expensive leather hit the linoleum with a dull thud, its contents spilling out—including a sleek, black encrypted phone that began to buzz frantically.

"Brandon!" she whimpered, grabbing his arm. "Do something!"

Brandon tried to regain his composure, pulling his shoulders back and adopting the aggressive posture he used in corporate boardroom takeovers. "Vance, you have nothing. I am the legal husband. I authorized the transfer. My power of attorney over Emily’s medical decisions is ironclad. It was signed during our marriage."

"A power of attorney obtained through fraud is void ab initio, Mr. Miller," Arthur Vance said calmly. He signaled the two marshals. "Search his jacket. He has the original clinic ledger tokens on his encrypted drive."

"Don't touch me!" Brandon shouted, struggling as the two massive marshals slammed him against the privacy curtain, swiftly twisting his arms behind his back and clicking heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"Brandon Miller, you are under arrest for federal medical fraud, grand larceny of biological assets, and corporate identity theft," the lead marshal recited, forcing Brandon toward the door.

"Emily!" Brandon screamed over his shoulder, his face twisted in a mixture of rage and terror as he was dragged down the corridor. "You’re nothing without my name! You sign those papers! If you don't give me my sons, I will burn your life to the ground!"

Vanessa was handcuffed next, her loud, hysterical sobbing echoing through the maternity ward as she was escorted out behind him, leaving her expensive bag and her broken lies behind on the floor.

The room fell into a sudden, heavy silence. Patricia, the nurse, immediately went to the bassinets, checking the monitors of the triplets to ensure the commotion hadn't destabilized their vitals.

I lay back against the pillows, my whole body shaking uncontrollably. The physical pain of my surgery was nothing compared to the howling, dark vacuum inside my chest. I looked at the three babies—Noah, Caleb, and Luke. They didn't have my blood. They didn't have my DNA. They belonged to the woman who had just tried to destroy me.

"Mrs. Miller," Arthur Vance said quietly, stepping closer to my bed. His hard features softened slightly as he looked at my tears. "I know what the nurse said must have felt like a execution. But I need you to understand something very clearly before the lawyers arrive."

I looked up at him through my blurred vision. "What?"

Vance reached into his briefcase and pulled out a secondary file, setting it gently on my lap, away from the bloodstains.

"Vanessa Cole didn't donate those eggs willingly to help Brandon," Vance said. "She sold them to him because she was bankrupt from a failed real estate fraud in Europe. But more importantly... look at the second page of the laboratory manifest, Emily."

With trembling fingers, I flipped the page.

"The donor profile Brandon used was modified," Vance explained. "The eggs used to create these triplets weren't just Vanessa's. The lab spliced the genetic material using a maternal mitochondrial sequence from a closed donor bank. A bank containing the genetic legacy of your own late sister, Sarah, who passed away four years ago."

My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the medical codes. Sarah. My older sister, who had frozen her eggs before her battle with leukemia took her away from me.

"Brandon didn't just steal from a lab, Emily," Vance whispered. "He tried to erase you, but in his greed, he accidentally used your own family's bloodline to complete the sequence. These boys aren't his legacy. They are yours."
