Chapter 6 - The Strategy of the Cell

The Metropolitan Detention Center was a concrete block of gray shadows and iron bars located in the industrial belly of downtown Los Angeles.

I sat behind the thick ballistic glass window of the high-security visitation lounge, the weight of the space making the air feel thick and heavy. I had left the boys at the Malibu safehouse under the protection of Patricia and three federal guards. I hadn't wanted to see Brandon, but Arthur Vance had insisted that the final voluntary relinquishment of his parental claims needed to be witnessed by the primary petitioner.

The heavy iron door on the opposite side of the glass opened.

Brandon Miller walked into the room. He wore a coarse, oversized orange jumpsuit, his hands chained to a heavy leather belt around his waist. The manicured hair was gone, replaced by a greasy, unwashed mess; his sharp jawline was covered in a patchy, uneven beard, and his eyes were bloodshot and wild with the desperation of an imprisoned animal.

He slammed his chained hands against the glass as he sat down, the metal links rattling with a violent sound. He grabbed the plastic telephone receiver.

"Emily!" he hissed, his voice cracking with a manic, dangerous energy. "You have to call off Vance! He’s crazy! He’s trying to tie the corporate expansion into a federal racketeering charge! My mother is being evicted from the house! Do you have any idea what they’re doing to me in here?"

I slowly picked up my receiver, holding it to my ear with a calm, deadpan expression that seemed to infuriate him even more.

"You look exactly like you belong in here, Brandon," I said softly.

"You think you’ve won?" he sneered, leaning his face close to the glass, his breath fogging the surface. "You’re nothing but a placeholder, Emily. Those kids aren't yours. The lab results are public now. Vanessa’s lawyers are filing for an emergency maternal custody extraction next week. The moment she gets them out, my family’s legal team will restructure the trust. You’re going to end up back in that dirty little apartment in Columbus with nothing but your hospital bills."

"Vanessa isn't filing anything, Brandon," I said.

I pulled a single sheet of paper from my pocket and held it against the glass. It was a signed, notarized affidavit from the California Department of Corrections, executed by Vanessa Cole forty-eight hours ago.

"She signed the full, unconditional parental relinquishment in exchange for a recommended sentence reduction from Arthur's team," I explained, watching the final trace of arrogance drain from his bloodshot eyes. "She’s pleading guilty to the fraud, Brandon. She testified that you forced her into the egg extraction protocol by threatening to expose her European real estate accounts to the Interpol task force. She didn't want your legacy, Brandon. She just wanted her debts paid."

Brandon stared at the affidavit, his mouth twitching as the reality of his isolation finally settled into his bones. His own mistress had turned him over to save her skin. His mother was bankrupt. His empire was an asset-freeze inventory.

"You're a monster," he whispered behind the glass.

"I am a mother, Brandon," I corrected him, my voice dropping into an absolute, unyielding register. "I spent seven months enduring the pain you engineered for your greed. I felt every kick of those three boys while you were planning to lock me in an asylum. I didn't lose, Brandon. I just stayed in the room long enough to count the balance."

I set the telephone receiver down on the metal cradle. I stood up, adjusting my black wool suit jacket, and walked out of the visitation room without looking back at the chained man who was currently screaming obscenities against the soundproof glass.
