Chapter 2: The Underwriting Slaughter

Chapter 2: The Underwriting Slaughter
The corporate headquarters of Pacific Underwriters sat on the seventy-fifth floor of the Columbia Center, a gleaming black tower that pierced the Seattle clouds.
Adrian Vale adjusted his silk tie in the reflection of the glass doors, a smug, bulletproof confidence radiating from his every movement. Beside him, Celeste Monroe looked stunning in a tailored cream dress, her black Birkin bag resting prominently on her lap as they sat in the ultra-luxury waiting room.
"This is it, babe," Adrian whispered, leaning over to kiss her cheek. "Once the board signs off on this bond, Vale Logistics becomes a multi-billion-dollar player. We’ll buy a villa in Saint-Tropez by the summer. Evelyn and her triplets can live on whatever scraps my lawyers throw her in the family court."

Celeste giggled, her red nails stroking his arm. "You’re so cruel, Adrian. I love it."
The double doors of the boardroom opened, and a senior executive stepped out, his face pale and tight. "Mr. Vale, the board is ready for you. But we have a change in the meeting protocol. Our primary institutional investor decided to fly in personally to oversee the underwriting."
Adrian frowned slightly, but his arrogance quickly took over. "No problem. I love an audience."
When Adrian and Celeste stepped into the massive, mahogany-lined boardroom, the atmosphere inside was sub-zero. Sitting at the head of the long glass table were twelve of the most powerful financial minds in the Pacific Northwest. But it was the three people sitting in the center of the executive chairs that made Adrian’s heart skip a beat.
Sitting in a stunning, midnight-blue power suit, her hair perfectly styled, her eyes holding a lethal, razor-sharp intelligence, was me.
Beside me sat my mother, elegant and composed, and my father, Arthur Sterling, wearing a bespoke British suit that cost more than Adrian’s annual salary. On the table in front of us were three clear, portable bassinets, where our triplets slept peacefully, completely oblivious to the financial execution about to take place.
"Evelyn?" Adrian gasped, his composure slipping for a fraction of a second before he recovered, his face twisting into an angry snarl. "What the hell is this? This is a high-level commercial meeting! How did you get past security? And why did you bring your parents here? This isn't a welfare office!"
Celeste took a step back, her eyes wide as she looked at the heavy gold crest on my father’s signet ring—the unmistakable mark of the Sterling family.
"Mr. Vale," the CEO of Pacific Underwriters said, his voice completely devoid of warmth. "Please sit down and shut up. You are speaking to the primary shareholders of Sterling International, the parent company that owns ninety percent of this underwriting firm, and eighty percent of the banks holding your corporate debt."
Adrian felt the air completely leave his lungs. He stumbled back, his hand catching the edge of a chair to keep from falling. "Sterling... International? No. That’s impossible. Evelyn’s father is a retired history teacher from Ohio! They live in a modest suburb!"
"We lived in that suburb because my daughter wanted to know if you loved her for her heart, or her ledger," my father said, standing up slowly. His presence filled the room with a crushing, authoritative gravity. "And you proved exactly what you are, Adrian. A thief. A coward. A man who throws his recovering wife and newborn sons onto the street to please a woman who values a leather bag more than human life."
"Evelyn, please," Adrian stammered, sweat breaking out across his forehead as he looked at me, his arrogant smirk completely vanishing. "This is business. We can sort out the personal stuff later! The Port of Seattle contract—"
"The Port of Seattle contract has already been canceled, Adrian," I said, my voice echoing with a chilling, absolute clarity. I tapped a neat stack of documents in front of me. "As the new majority shareholder of Vale Logistics—thanks to the emergency debt-equity conversion clauses your lawyers so sloppily signed last year—I have terminated your position as CEO, effective immediately. You have been stripped of your voting shares, your corporate salary, and your executive benefits."

"You can't do that!" Celeste screamed, her carefully curated high-society facade completely cracking. "The Medina house is mine! Adrian signed it over to me! You can't touch it!"
I looked at Celeste, a cold, pitying smile touching my lips. "The Medina house was purchased using a corporate line of credit belonging to Vale Logistics, Celeste. Since Adrian used corporate funds to transfer a company asset to a third-party mistress without board approval, it constitutes felony embezzlement and grand larceny. The state prosecutor has already issued the seizure warrant. By the time you get back to Medina, the sheriff's deputies will be waiting to escort you off the property."
