Chapter 3: The Freezing of the Parasites

Chapter 3: The Freezing of the Parasites

The aftermath of the boardroom slaughter was a masterclass in systematic demolition. Within twenty-four hours, the name Adrian Vale went from a symbol of rising corporate ambition to a toxic warning label in the global financial community.

I stood in the sleek, high-rise offices of Sterling Legal Counsel, looking out at the rainy Seattle skyline. Behind me, Lauren Vance, the sharpest corporate and family law attorney in the country, was reviewing the real-time financial tracking sheets.

"He’s completely boxed in, Claire," Lauren said, a look of profound satisfaction on her face. "Adrian tried to liquidate his private offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands this morning to fund his defense. He didn't realize that the clearinghouse bank is a wholly owned subsidiary of your father’s wealth fund. We flagged the transfers for suspected money laundering and froze the entire sixteen million dollars."

"What about Celeste?" I asked, adjusting the blanket over little Alexander, who was resting in a bassinet beside my desk.

"Celeste Monroe is currently living in a cheap, two-star motel near the airport," Lauren replied, pulling up a series of public records. "Her boutique modeling agency was funded entirely by Adrian’s corporate credit cards. Since those cards have been deactivated, her landlords have locked the doors of her studio for non-payment of rent. Her wealthy 'friends' have blocked her number. And the black Birkin bag she was parading around? The fraud recovery team seized it yesterday morning as a stolen asset bought with embezzled corporate funds."

A deep, profound sense of liberation washed over me. Just three days ago, I was sitting in a hospital bed, bleeding, exhausted, and being told that I was too ugly, too helpless, and too broken to ever be wanted again. Adrian had used my vulnerability as a weapon to entertain his mistress. Now, they were both discovering the true meaning of powerlessness.

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the desk. It was an unknown number. I picked it up, putting it on speaker.

"Evelyn... please," Adrian’s voice came through the speaker, ragged, desperate, and dripping with a raw, pathetic panic. He sounded like a man who hadn't slept in days. "You have to stop this. The police are outside my temporary apartment. The bank has frozen my personal checking account—I couldn't even buy a sandwich this morning! Please, think about our sons! If I go to prison, their legacy is ruined!"

"Our sons' legacy is perfectly safe with me, Adrian," I said, my voice as cold and unchanging as stone. "You didn't care about their legacy when you left them outside a locked gate in the rain. You didn't care about their future when you forced me to sign a property waiver while I was still recovering from a high-risk delivery."

"I was stupid! I was manipulated by Celeste!" he sobbed into the line, his arrogant pride completely turning into liquid ash. "She pushed me to do it! She wanted the house! I still love you, Evelyn! We can go to counseling! We can fix this!"

"You don't love me, Adrian. You love my father's balance sheet," I said. "And as for fixing this? The audit is already complete. The court date for your criminal trial is set for next Tuesday. I suggest you get used to wearing orange. It’s a much more public look than your navy suits."

I hung up the phone without waiting for his response, deleting the call log with a single click. The countdown to his absolute annihilation was down to zero.
