Chapter 4: The Courtroom Cleansing

The King County Superior Court was packed to capacity with journalists, corporate executives, and high-society onlookers who had gathered to watch the spectacular fall of Adrian Vale.

Adrian sat at the defense table, looking thin, unkempt, and utterly broken. His expensive suit was wrinkled, his hair messy, his posture slumped forward as if he were trying to shrink into the floorboards. Beside him, Celeste Monroe sat in handcuffs, wearing a plain gray jumpsuit, her red manicured nails long since chipped and broken.

The judge, a formidable woman with twenty years of federal bench experience, reviewed the massive binders of financial forensics and hospital security footage Lauren Vance had submitted.

"Mr. Vale," the judge said, her voice dropping like a heavy iron mallet in the quiet room. "The evidence presented by the prosecution is nothing short of horrifying. You did not merely commit corporate fraud and embezzlement; you executed a calculated, malicious campaign of psychological abuse, identity theft, and financial deprivation against your recovering wife and newborn children."

"Your Honor, my client was under extreme corporate stress—" Adrian’s state-appointed lawyer began, his voice weak.

"Silence," the judge commanded, cutting him off with a single, sharp look. "The hospital records show that Mr. Vale intentionally used his position to intimidate medical staff and force his wife to sign legal waivers while heavily medicated and physically traumatized. This is not corporate stress. This is criminal depravity."

The judge turned her attention to the final sentencing guidelines.

"On the charges of grand larceny, commercial fraud, and felony embezzlement, this court sentences you, Adrian Vale, to fourteen years in a maximum-security state penitentiary, with a mandatory restitution order of twenty-two million dollars to the Sterling International Trust."

Adrian let out a quiet, pathetic gasp, his face dropping onto the defense table as a pair of sheriff's deputies stepped forward, pulling his arms behind his back to snap the heavy steel handcuffs shut.

"As for you, Ms. Monroe," the judge continued, looking down at Celeste with deep disgust. "For your active co-conspiracy in the concealment of stolen corporate assets and fraud, you are sentenced to five years in the regional correctional facility, followed by three years of supervised probation."

Celeste burst into frantic, ugly tears, screaming at Adrian as the guards dragged her out of the room. "You ruined my life! You told me she was nobody! You promised me a mansion!"

I stood up from the gallery, flanked by my mother and father. I looked at Adrian one last time as he was led toward the holding cells. He caught my eye, his face filled with a desperate, pleading agony, but I simply turned my back on him. The ledger was balanced. The monsters were in their cages.
