Chapter 2: The Hidden Compartment

Chapter 2: The Hidden Compartment
The security office was stark, illuminated by the cold glare of a dozen closed-circuit television monitors. Victoria sat rigidly in a leather chair, her arms tightly crossed over the disputed handbag, refusing the glass of water Julian had offered. Lily sat on a chair opposite her, her small legs swinging back and forth, entirely unbothered by the high-tech surroundings.
Julian stood by the door, accompanied by a local police detective, Marcus Torres, whom he had quietly summoned through a backdoor entrance to avoid further public scene.
"Mrs. Hale," Detective Torres said, pulling out a notepad. "We can do this the easy way or the hard way. If you refuse to let us verify the contents of the bag, I have sufficient reasonable suspicion based on the child's specific testimony and your visible distress to detain the item as potential evidence in a grand larceny investigation. Let us look inside."
Victoria’s manicured nails dug deep into the expensive leather of her sleeves. She knew she was cornered. With a look of pure, unadulterated venom directed at Lily, she slammed the bag down onto the metal desk.

"Fine! Look at it! See the empty delusions of a gutter child!" Victoria snapped.
Julian stepped forward, pulling a pair of white cotton inspection gloves onto his hands. He opened the main zipper of the bag. The interior was lined with an exquisite, emerald-green silk. To any casual observer, it was a standard, ultra-luxury compartment filled with Victoria's expensive cosmetics, a designer wallet, and a gold pen.
Julian carefully emptied the contents onto a tray. He felt along the structured base of the bag, his fingers pressing against the seams. For a long moment, there was nothing but the sound of Victoria's impatient, shallow breathing.
"See? Nothing," Victoria sneered, reaching out to grab it. "Now if you're done playing detective—"
"Wait," Julian murmured. He turned the bag inside out, focusing on the very bottom corner where the emerald silk met a heavy leather piping. His thumb caught on a microscopic, seamless zipper tab—so expertly hidden within the embroidery that it was completely invisible unless you knew exactly where to press.
With a soft zzzzp, the hidden lining parted.
Julian reached his gloved fingers into the narrow, concealed slit. When he pulled his hand back out, a small object glinted brightly under the harsh fluorescent lights.
It was a delicate, custom-crafted platinum ring. Engraved along the inner band in elegant script was a single word: Lily.
Detective Torres leaned in, his face turning incredibly grave. He looked from the ring to Victoria, whose face had gone completely gray.
"Care to explain this, Mrs. Hale?" Torres asked, his voice dropping into an ominous, interrogative tone. "Because unless your name is Lily, or you have a habit of carrying around custom children's jewelry hidden inside secret compartments of bags you claim to have bought retail, we have a very serious problem."

Victoria’s mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. The pristine facade of the elite billionaire socialite had shattered completely, leaving behind a terrified woman caught red-handed in a lie that went far deeper than a stolen purse.
Lily looked up at Julian, a small, sad smile touching her lips. "I told you. It’s my mommy’s. Where is she, lady? What did you do to my mommy?"
