Chapter 3: The Ghost of Clara Evans

Chapter 3: The Ghost of Clara Evans
The discovery of the ring transformed the incident from a petty property dispute into a full-blown criminal investigation. Within an hour, Detective Torres had accessed the National Missing Persons database, tracing the origins of the bespoke handbag and the name inscribed on the hidden ring.
The truth began to unravel like a fraying tapestry. Three years ago, a brilliant, independent luxury leather artisan named Clara Evans had vanished without a trace from her workshop in upstate New York. Clara had been a rising star in the fashion world, known for creating incredibly exclusive, one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces for high-end clientele. Her signature trademark? A stylized, soaring falcon clasp.
When she disappeared, her seven-year-old daughter, Lily, had been left behind with a distant, negligent relative, eventually slipping through the cracks of the system and living on the streets, driven by a single, burning obsession: to find her mother.

"Clara Evans was a contractor for Hale International Enterprises," Detective Torres stated, reading from his tablet as he paced the security room. "Specifically, she was hired by your husband’s firm to design an exclusive line of accessories. Three weeks before she went missing, she filed a formal intellectual property theft complaint against you, Victoria, claiming you were trying to steal her designs and patent them under your own name."
Victoria sat completely frozen, her eyes fixated on the metal table. She had requested her lawyer, but the storm was moving too fast for legal technicalities to shield her.
"I bought that bag directly from her studio before she left," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling. "The ring... I have no idea how it got there. She must have left it by mistake."
"An artisan doesn't accidentally sew a custom platinum ring into a secret, structural compartment of a finished product meant for a client, Mrs. Hale," Julian Vance said, leaning over the desk. "And more importantly, your credit card statements from three years ago show a massive, unexplained cash withdrawal of fifty thousand dollars on the exact night Clara Evans vanished. Where did that money go?"
Lily stood up from her chair, walking slowly over to Victoria. Despite her dirty clothes and small stature, the little girl possessed an immense, crushing gravity.
"My mommy told me she was making a special shield," Lily said, her voice echoing in the small room. "She said if the bad people tried to take her work, the falcon would catch them. You took her, didn't you? You took my mommy so you could be famous."
"Get this child away from me!" Victoria suddenly panicked, leaping out of her chair and backing into the corner of the office. "I didn't hurt anyone! It was my husband! It was Arthur's idea!"
The confession, blurted out in a moment of pure, unadulterated panic, filled the room like a physical weight. Detective Torres immediately hit the record button on his device.

"Your husband, Arthur Hale?" Torres pressed. "What was his idea, Victoria?"
Realizing she had said too much, Victoria clamped her mouth shut, bursting into hysterical tears as the door to the office opened and her high-priced corporate defense attorney finally rushed in. But the damage was done. The thread had been pulled, and the entire Hale empire was about to unravel.
