Chapter 5 - The Masterstroke

Within forty-eight hours, Vanessa Ashford was arrested on charges of grand larceny, corporate fraud, and embezzlement. The news sent Montgomery Dynamics into a terminal tailspin. The stock price crashed to an all-time low of three dollars per share.
Nathan sat alone in his empty mansion. The servants had quit because their checks were bouncing. The lights in the grand hallway were dim, mirroring the darkness in his mind. He realized now that Madeline hadn't just come back to beat him; she had come to completely dismantle the false reality he had chosen over her.
The front doorbell rang.
Nathan walked down the long, empty hallway and opened the massive mahogany door.
Madeline stood on the porch. She was dressed in a sharp, tailored black coat, her eyes calm and steady. She held a single, black leather folder in her hand.
"Madeline," Nathan breathed, a desperate spark of hope igniting in his chest. "Please, come in. Let me explain. I never knew about Vanessa's fraud... I never knew about the children... If I had known—"
"If you had known, what?" Madeline interrupted, her voice cool, stepping past him into the foyer. She looked around at the dusty chandeliers and the lonely grandeur of the house. "Would you have loved me more if I told you I was carrying four children? Or would you have just seen them as four more liabilities on your balance sheet?"
"No! I loved you, Madeline! I did!" Nathan pleaded, tears finally spilling over his eyes. "I was weak. I was terrified of losing my father's legacy. The pressure was suffocating, and she offered an easy way out. I've regretted it every single day for five years."
Madeline turned to face him, her expression unchanging. "Regret is a luxury of the broke, Nathan. When I walked out of that restaurant into the rain, I didn't have time for regret. I had to build a world where my children would never have to rely on a man like you."
She placed the black folder on the foyer table.
"What is this?" Nathan asked, his voice shaking.
"It’s an unconditional surrender," Madeline said. "Aegis Energy has purchased eighty-two percent of your company's outstanding debt from your creditors. We now own your mortgages, your equipment leases, and your lines of credit. This document transfers your remaining twenty percent personal stock ownership of Montgomery Dynamics to the Hayes Family Trust in exchange for the dismissal of all personal liability lawsuits against you."
Nathan stared at the folder. "You're taking the company. Everything my father built."
"Your father built a company based on innovation," Madeline said. "You turned it into a monument to your own ego. Tomorrow morning at nine, Aegis will officially announce the acquisition. Montgomery Dynamics will cease to exist. It will be rebranded as the Elaine Hayes Memorial Research Institute."
Nathan felt his knees go weak. He sank onto the bottom step of the grand staircase, his head in his hands. He had lost everything. His wealth, his reputation, his legacy. And worst of all, he had lost the only woman who had ever truly loved him for who he was, along with four beautiful, brilliant children he would never get to hold.
"Can I see them?" Nathan whispered, his voice cracking with a deep, visceral pain. "Just once. Let me talk to them. Let me tell them I'm sorry."

Madeline looked down at him, and for a split second, a tiny flicker of human sympathy crossed her face, before being replaced by the iron wall of a mother's protection.
"They already know who you are, Nathan," she said quietly. "And they've already made their decision."
