Chapter 6 - The New Boardroom

The following morning, the sun rose brightly over Manhattan, casting a brilliant golden glow over the glass facade of what used to be the Montgomery Dynamics headquarters.
Inside the main executive boardroom, the environment had been completely transformed. The old, heavy mahogany furniture had been replaced with sleek, sustainable glass and polished steel. Huge digital displays covered the walls, showing real-time clean energy outputs from Aegis installations across North America.
Madeline sat at the head of the long table, looking stunning in a crisp white power suit. Harrison Croft sat to her right, a proud smile on his face.
The double doors opened, and Nathan Montgomery walked in. He wore a simple, dark grey suit—no longer the tailored designer pieces of his past. He looked humble, stripped of his arrogance, carrying himself like a man who had accepted his fate.
Behind him walked the four children. They didn't sit with him; they walked over to Madeline’s side of the table, taking their places in smaller, custom-designed ergonomic chairs next to their mother.
"Thank you for coming, Nathan," Madeline said, her tone professional, devoid of malice.
"I signed the papers, Madeline," Nathan said, placing the executed contract on the table. "The company is yours. The assets, the buildings, the patents. Everything. I've liquidated my personal assets to ensure the remaining low-level employees receive their full transition bonuses. I wanted to make sure they were taken care of."
Liam looked up from his tablet, his sharp eyes evaluating Nathan. "A statistically appropriate move, Mr. Montgomery. It prevents potential labor union litigation during the transition phase. Highly rational."
Nathan looked at Liam, a painful, bittersweet smile touching his lips. "I didn't do it for the statistics, son. I did it because it was the right thing to do. Something I should have learned a long time ago."
Charlotte tapped a button on her device, displaying a new corporate organizational chart on the main screen. "The restructuring is complete. Aegis has integrated your core physical infrastructure. But we have a vacancy in the regional operations department. Someone needs to manage the physical implementation of the new micro-grids in the tri-state area. It requires deep knowledge of New York's municipal zoning laws and local contractor networks."
Nathan blinked, confused. "Why are you showing me this?"
Ethan leaned forward, his dimples showing, though his eyes remained serious. "Because you're the most qualified applicant, Mr. Montgomery. You spent ten years navigating New York logistics. We interviewed six other candidates, but their efficiency ratings were twelve percent lower than your historical performance metrics."
Nathan looked from Ethan to Madeline, his heart hammering in his chest. "You're... you're offering me a job? At the company I used to own?"
"We don't hire based on sentimentality, Nathan," Madeline said smoothly. "We hire based on capability. My children analyzed the data, and they believe you can be an asset to Aegis. You will report directly to Harrison, and your salary will be standard for a mid-level director. No executive privileges. No stock options."
Nathan swallowed hard. It was a complete demotion, a public comedown from billionaire CEO to a standard employee. But as he looked at the four faces staring at him—faces that carried his features but possessed a brilliance he could only dream of—he realized this wasn't a punishment.

It was a chance. A chance to prove to them, day by day, that he could be a man worthy of being in their presence.
"I accept," Nathan said, his voice thick with emotion. "I'll start immediately."
