Chapter 2 - The Wrath of the Ghost

The Escalade glided effortlessly across the George Washington Bridge, moving away from the bleakness of Jersey City toward the towering, glittering spires of Manhattan. Inside the cabin, the silence was absolute, broken only by the soft purr of the engine.

Grace sat pressed against the leather door, her mind spinning out of control. "You're the anonymous benefactor. You hired Marcus Hale."

"Marcus is on my payroll, yes," Daniel said smoothly, pouring a glass of amber liquid from a small decanter built into the console. He offered it to her, but she shook her head. He placed it down without a word. "What the Park family did to you in that courthouse was an error in judgment. What they are doing to you in the press is a declaration of war."

"Daniel... I don't understand," Grace stammered, rubbing her cold arms. "Why do you care? That night in Flushing was three years ago. I just did what anyone would do."

"No," Daniel corrected softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a weight that made it impossible to look away. "Most people would have walked past a dying man in an alley. Most people would have called the police, which would have ended my life at that time. You stayed. You ruined a two-hundred-dollar cashmere scarf to stop my blood, and you didn't ask for a single dollar when my men arrived to pick me up."

"I didn't need a reward," she whispered.

"I know. That is why I have spent the last three years ensuring you were safe," Daniel said. He leaned back against the headrest, his expression turning cold as a winter night. "Every time you walked down a dark street in Manhattan after a gala, my cars were a block behind you. Every time Ethan Park stayed out until four in the morning leaving you alone in that penthouse, my men were watching the doors. I kept my distance because you were a married woman, and you chose that life. I respected your choice."

Grace’s eyes widened. "You've been watching me for three years?"

"Protecting you," Daniel clarified gently. "But the moment you signed those papers and walked out of that building with nothing but a suitcase, the rules changed. And when Mrs. Park decided to use her media connections to turn you into a pariah, she crossed a line she cannot afford to cross."

"Daniel, you don't know the Parks," Grace said, panic rising in her voice again. "They are ruthless. Park Meridian Group controls half the commercial development in the city. They have political ties in Albany. They will destroy you if you interfere."

A short, low laugh escaped Daniel’s lips. It wasn't a joyful sound; it was the sound of a predator listening to a threat from a sheep.

"Let me tell you something about the Park family, Grace," Daniel said, leaning forward, his presence suddenly filling the entire space with an oppressive, dark aura. "They own the buildings, yes. They buy the politicians, yes. But they operate in the light because they are terrified of the dark. They think their money makes them untouchable. They don't know that the very ground their buildings sit on belongs to me."

He tapped the glass window. "The Park Meridian project on the West Side? The union workers, the concrete suppliers, the disposal companies—they answer to me. If I breathe too hard, their entire construction empire turns into a pile of unfinanced dust by Monday morning."

Grace stared at him, the pieces of the puzzle suddenly falling into place with terrifying clarity. "You're... you're Daniel Seo. The investor from the Queens development board."

"That is my public title," Daniel said, his face a mask of absolute calm. "The streets call me something else. But to you, I am just the man who owes you a life. And right now, I am going to give you yours back."

The Escalade pulled up to the private entrance of an ultra-luxury residential high-rise in Tribeca. The doorman, seeing the vehicle, immediately stood at attention, bowing deeply as Daniel stepped out.

Daniel extended his hand to Grace. "Welcome to your new home, Grace. The Parks told the world you came into their family with nothing. Let's see how they react when you take everything they have left."
