Chapter 5 - The Shattered Dynasty

The gala was the beginning of the end for Park Meridian Group. The image of Grace Bennett walking into Lincoln Center on the arm of Daniel Seo sent shockwaves through Manhattan’s financial and political circles. Bankers who had been wavering on loans for the Parks' West Side project suddenly pulled out, terrified of crossing the man who controlled the city’s infrastructure from the shadows.
By midnight after the gala, Ethan Park was drowning his panic in scotch at a private club in Soho. His phone was buzzing continuously on the table—calls from the board, calls from the public relations team, calls from his mother.
He ignored them all. He could only see the way Grace had looked in that midnight-blue dress. The way she had looked at him with absolute indifference. For five years, he had taken her for granted, letting his mother treat her like a servant because it was easier than fighting. Now, she was completely out of his reach, protected by a man he feared.
The door to his private booth swung open.
Two large men in dark suits stepped in, blocking the exit. Behind them came Daniel Seo.
Daniel walked into the dimly lit booth with the slow, terrifying calm of a ghost. He sat across from Ethan, resting his hands on the edge of the table. The gold embroidery on his cuffs glinted in the low amber light.
Ethan tried to look brave, but his hand shook as he set his glass down. "Seo. What do you want? If you touch me, my family's legal team will—"
"Your family's legal team is currently preparing for a federal tax audit, Ethan," Daniel interrupted, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that made the hair on Ethan’s arms stand up. "I didn't come here to touch you. I came to give you a choice."
Daniel leaned forward, his dark eyes trapping Ethan’s gaze. "By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, you will sign a full, public confession detailng every lie your mother authorized against Grace. You will transfer twenty percent of your personal equity in Park Meridian to a charitable foundation for arts and education under Grace’s name. And you will take your mother and leave New York permanently."
Ethan gasped, his face turning pale. "Twenty percent? That’s my entire inheritance! My mother will never agree to leave the city! This is extortion!"
"This is mercy," Daniel said, his voice dropping into a chillingly flat register. "If you don't sign, Marcus Hale releases the internal audit reports to the IRS by noon. Your construction sites will remain permanently frozen. And the men who protect your family's shipping lanes in the harbor... will receive an order from me to stop working."
May you like
Daniel stood up, buttoning his jacket with slow, mechanical precision. "You have nine hours, Ethan. Choose whether you want to be a broke civilian in California or a prisoner in New York."
He turned and walked out, leaving Ethan alone in the dark booth, suffocating under the weight of his own choices.
