Chapter 3 - Gathering the Battalion

At 0800 hours the next morning, I walked into a private, high-security conference room in downtown Atlanta. David Reynolds, my investigator, was already there, surrounded by three large monitors displaying complex data arrays, bank account flows, and corporate structures. Sitting next to him was Marcus Sterling, the most ruthless, brilliant corporate and criminal defense attorney in North Carolina, a man I had retained at dawn with a massive non-refundable retainer from my personal savings account—funds Ashley’s contract couldn't touch.

"Michael," Sterling said, shaking my hand with a firm, iron grip. "I reviewed the pre-nuptial and merger agreement you signed with the Bennett family. It’s nasty. It was drafted by a specialist team in New York. On paper, the moment you formally declare the engagement broken, forty-nine percent of your corporate control slips away, and if they prove 'moral turpitude' or behavioral violations, they take the remaining two percent to secure a majority."

"I don't care about the shares, Marcus," I said, throwing my jacket over a chair. "I care about the custody clause. Ashley threatened to use state family preservation laws to declare Emily an unfit mother due to her homelessness, and then use third-party guardianship to take my sons."

Marcus Sterling leaned back, a grim smile playing on his lips. "That’s where she made her tactical mistake, Michael. She built her entire trap based on the assumption that you would try to save your company. She thought the threat of financial ruin would keep you in line until the wedding, at which point you would be legally locked into her family infrastructure forever."

David Reynolds tapped his keyboard, bringing up a series of financial documents marked with the seal of the Internal Revenue Service.

"Michael, look at this," David said. "When Ashley’s brother, Bradley Bennett, redirected your missing bank transfers through those shell accounts to frame Emily for theft, he didn't just commit corporate fraud. He moved the money through an offshore digital entity registered in the Cayman Islands that is currently under a federal grand jury investigation for international money laundering."

I leaned closer to the monitor, my eyes narrowing. "Are you telling me the Bennetts are tied to something bigger?"

"The Bennett Real Estate firm is a house of cards, Michael," David explained. "Over the last three years, their commercial developments in Savannah and Atlanta have been bleeding money. They were using the impending merger with Carter Global as a financial shield to convince their foreign investors that they were still stable. Ashley didn't just want you because she loved you... she wanted your logistics infrastructure to absorb their debt and mask an international tax evasion scheme."

"So if the merger fails..." I murmured.

"If the merger fails, and the fraud is exposed, the Bennett family doesn't just lose Carter Global," Marcus Sterling intervened, his voice sharp and precise. "They face full federal racketeering charges under the RICO statute. The state judges they have in their pocket can't protect them from a federal prosecutor out of the Department of Justice."

A cold sense of satisfaction began to replace the anxiety in my chest. Ashley thought she was holding a winning hand because she had a corrupt family court judge on her payroll. She didn't realize she had brought a knife to an artillery fight.

"What's the play, Marcus?" I asked.

"We don't announce the breakup yet," Sterling stated, leaning forward, his eyes locked on mine. "If you declare the engagement void today, they execute the share transfer and launch the custody suit before the federal authorities can process our fraud report. We need to play along for exactly seventy-two hours. You need to return to your office, pretend you are considering her terms, and let David finalize the forensic link between Ashley's personal laptop and the falsified evidence used against Emily a year ago."

"I can't leave Emily and the boys alone at the cabin, Marcus," I said, shaking my head. "If Ashley tracks them down—"

"They won't be alone," David Reynolds said. "I’ve already placed three former military security operators around the perimeter of that cabin. Nobody gets within a mile of Emily without my team knowing. She is safer there than she has ever been."

I closed my eyes, the weight of the strategy settling over me. To save my family, I had to walk back into the lion's den. I had to look at the woman who had ruined my life and pretend I was still her puppet.

"Seventy-two hours," I said, opening my eyes. "Let's begin."
