Chapter 5 - The Snake's Dinner

The Oakridge Country Club was a bastion of old Georgia wealth—all white pillars, manicured lawns, and heavy crystal chandeliers. At 2000 hours, I walked into the private dining room dressed in the blue suit Ashley had demanded.

Ashley was already seated, looking radiant in a emerald-green gown, flanked by her brother Bradley and Judge Arthur Henderson, a heavy-set man with silver hair and a red face that spoke of too much expensive bourbon and too little integrity.

"Michael! Come in, my boy," Judge Henderson boomed, standing up to shake my hand with a jovial warmth that sickened me. "Ashley was just telling me about the wonderful expansion plans for Carter Global after the wedding. A marvelous merger of two great Southern legacies."

"Thank you, Judge," I said, taking my seat opposite him. "It’s been a challenging week, but we’re focusing on the future."

Bradley Bennett, a sharp-faced man with slicked-back hair and restless eyes, leaned forward, tapping his fingers against his wine glass. "Michael, I noticed you put a temporary freeze on the Savannah port manifests this afternoon. We need those cleared by midnight for the incoming shipments from South America."

"Just a routine security check, Bradley," I replied smoothly, taking a sip of my water. "With the federal audits looming, I want to make sure everything is perfectly aligned. We wouldn't want any discrepancies in our cargo weights, would we?"

Bradley’s hand froze on his glass. He shot a quick, nervous glance at Ashley, who maintained her perfect, unbothered smile.

"Of course not," Ashley said smoothly, reaching across the table to touch my arm. "But let’s not talk about business tonight. Judge Henderson was actually very helpful today, Michael. He signed an emergency administrative order regarding that... unfortunate situation with your ex-wife."

I kept my face completely still. "An order?"

Judge Henderson cleared his throat, leaning forward with a patronizing expression. "As a family court judge, Michael, my primary concern is the welfare of children in our district. Given the documented history of instability and... let’s say, financial vagrancy associated with the mother, I’ve signed a preliminary third-party emergency protection mandate. If those twins are located within the state of Georgia, they will be taken into immediate state custody and placed under the temporary guardianship of a stable family unit... namely, Ms. Bennett here, pending a full behavioral evaluation of the biological mother."

The sheer, corrupt arrogance of the man left me breathless for a fraction of a second. He had signed away the rights of a mother and her children over an expensive steak dinner, without a single hearing, without a single piece of actual evidence, simply as a wedding present to the Bennett family.

"That's very thorough of you, Judge," I said, my voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous stillness. "But what happens if the children aren't in this district? What happens if they are under federal protection?"

Ashley laughed, a sharp, mocking sound. "Federal protection? Michael, don't be absurd. She’s a homeless girl with two bastards. The feds don't care about her."

I reached into my breast pocket and pulled out a sleek, black digital recording device, placing it flat on the white tablecloth right next to the floral centerpiece. The small red light on the side was blinking steadily.

"They care when the children are material witnesses in an international money laundering and corporate racketeering investigation, Ashley," I said calmly.

The table went completely silent. The jovial warmth vanished from Judge Henderson’s face, replaced by a sudden, sharp alarm. Bradley stood up so fast his chair fell backward against the carpet.

"What the hell is this, Carter?" Bradley hissed.

"This is forty-five minutes of recorded conversation detailing a conspiracy to commit judicial fraud, corporate coercion, and the illegal manipulation of state child welfare assets," I said, leaning forward, looking directly into Judge Henderson's panicked eyes. "And outside this dining room, Judge, are four agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They aren't here for a steak dinner. They’re here for you."

The heavy oak doors of the private dining room burst open, and four men in sharp suits with gold FBI badges pinned to their lapels walked in, led by David Reynolds and Marcus Sterling.

"Arthur Henderson, Bradley Bennett, Ashley Bennett," the lead agent announced, his voice carrying the absolute weight of federal authority. "We have a warrant for your arrest for federal conspiracy, wire fraud, and violation of the RICO statute. Hands where we can see them."
