Chapter 4 - The Puppet Master's Dance

Walking back into the glass-walled headquarters of Carter Global felt like stepping onto a battlefield wrapped in corporate luxury. The employees moved with their usual efficiency, completely unaware that the foundation of the company was vibrating with a silent, destructive frequency.
At 1400 hours, the doors to my executive office flew open, and Ashley walked in. She was unaccompanied by her lawyers this time, her expression triumphant as she threw her Chanel handbag onto my leather sofa.
"I knew you'd come to your senses, Michael," she said smoothly, walking over to my desk and leaning over the polished mahogany, her perfume filling the air—the same scent I had once associated with security, now smelling like venom. "You're an ambitious man. You were never meant to live in a shack with a woman who sifts through garbage for a living."
I forced my face to remain a mask of exhausted compliance. I didn't look at her with anger; I looked at her with the broken defeat she expected to see.
"You won, Ashley," I said, keeping my voice flat, hollow. "The lawyers reviewed the integration paperwork. If I fight you, my father's legacy goes under, and the board will oust me before the month ends. I can't let that happen."
She leaned down and pressed a soft kiss to my cheek. Her skin felt like ice against mine. "Good boy. I always knew you were smart underneath all that dramatic chivalry. Now, where is she?"
My heart skipped a beat, but I maintained my composure, my hands remaining steady on the desk. "I gave her fifty thousand dollars from my personal cash account to take the children and leave the state. She’s on a bus to Ohio. She won't be coming back, Ashley. She knows when she's beaten."
Ashley’s eyes narrowed slightly, a calculating look passing over her features. She studied my face for a long, agonizing five seconds, looking for any sign of deception. "Ohio? Convenient. But just to be sure, I'm going to have my brother's security team verify the bus manifests. If I find out you're lying to me, Michael... the deal is off."
"Verify whatever you want," I said, leaning back in my chair and rubbing my temples. "Just keep your brother out of my logistics servers. He’s been moving files around in the shipping division all morning, and it’s disrupting our quarterly audits."
"Bradley is just ensuring our mutual interests are protected before the merger is finalized on Friday," Ashley said dismissively, turning toward the door. "Oh, and Michael? We’re having dinner with Judge Henderson tonight at the country club. He wants to make sure our... administrative issues are fully resolved before the wedding. Be there at eight. Wear the blue suit I bought you."
As the door clicked shut behind her, I let out a long breath I hadn't realized I was holding. I opened my laptop and connected to the encrypted server David Reynolds had established.
"David, did you catch that?" I asked.
"Loud and clear, Michael," David’s voice came through my earpiece. "Bradley Bennett is inside your shipping servers right now. He’s trying to clear the digital manifests for three commercial freighters arriving in Savannah tomorrow morning. He doesn't know we’ve mirrored the drive. Every file he deletes is being saved directly to a federal secure drive in Washington."
"And the dinner tonight with Judge Henderson?"

"It’s a setup," David warned. "They want to get you on record, likely on a hidden recording device, admitting to paying Emily off to leave the state. They’ll use that to prove you used corporate funds for personal coercion, giving them the leverage to trigger the moral turpitude clause immediately."
I smiled, a cold, ruthless expression that had nothing to do with the corporate executive I used to be. "Let them record whatever they want. They think they’re setting a trap for me... but they’re just building their own scaffold."
